Restorative Practices

Restorative practices in schools are a teaching and learning approach that aims to build relationships and create a positive school climate. They are based on the idea that people are inherently good and interconnected, and that relationships are important. On November 5, Byam partnered with Center and South Row Elementary Schools to engage in a full day of professional development on restorative practices.

3rd Grade Dynamite Diners

Our 3rd Grade was our most recent winner of our Dynamite Diners! Students voted for free seating for a week. We will review the logistics of free seating with our third grade students this week and they will enjoy free seating all of next week, instead of sitting by classrooms.

Tier 2 SEL Opportunities

One of our major functions as a school is to support our students' social and emotional development. One way that we achieve this is provide tier 2 opportunities in our PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports) system. These opportunities give students extra practice and support in developing Social Emotional Learning (SEL) skills. We are in the process of finalizing these opportunities for selected students.

Conferences

We are at the beginning of family-teacher conference season. These conferences are an important piece in ongoing home-school communication and family involvement. The Harvard Family Research Project from the Harvard School of Education highlights three themes when approaching family-teacher conferences. Conferences should be a two-way conversation where both sides share information about the student. These conferences place an emphasis on learning. Finally conferences will most likely contain opportunities and challenges. They will include positive feedback and also areas for improvement. Home to school communication is a predictor for positive outcomes for students and schools and we at Byam look at our conference times with you as a way to strengthen our partnership.

Coat Drive Continues for "Debbie's Treasure Chest" Winter Items Donation Box

The box in the lobby continues to be available until 11/21 for donations of new or gently used coats or winter accessories. Winter coats, jackets, hats, mittens, gloves of Any Size 0-Adult to benefit those in need in the Merrimack Valley area. The mission of Debbie's Treasure Chest is "to create opportunities for children in the Merrimack Valley to reach their potential and to help low income families access resources for success."
