JMCSS receives Level 5 designation for outstanding academic growth
Thursday, November 14, 2024
JACKSON, TN — The results are in! The Tennessee Department of Education has named Jackson-Madison County Schools a Level 5 District as public school students in Madison County made exceptional scholastic growth during the 2023-2024 Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP). According to new TCAP testing data released by state officials, there is significant evidence that our teachers are growing our students more than expected from the composite level.
"These TCAP results are proof of what we know in our hearts—that our teachers and staff are going above and beyond for students and families in Madison County. This isn’t just about numbers on a test; it’s about knowing that our students are being supported, challenged, and encouraged every day to reach their full potential,” Chief Accountability and Assessment Officer Catherine Korth said.
TCAP tests measure student growth year over year. Being recognized as a Level 5 district by state officials means students and schools are outperforming projected growth metrics in multiple schools and tested subjects. Remarkable growth was realized in the 2023-2024 school year in 4th-8th grade English Language Arts (ELA); 4th-6th grade math; and 5th-8th grade Science. Additionally, proficiency numbers leaped upward over the last four years in 3rd-8th grade math.

"Achieving Level 5 status at the district level lets us know a numerous and diverse range of students developed a heightened understanding of content knowledge over the past 24 months. It’s a testament to the power of collaboration among our teachers, students, and families,” said Associate Superintendent Dr. Tiffany Spight.
In every single grade, our students improved over where they were before. Our high school composite scores showed considerable growth over the last four years in Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry. The district’s high school graduation rate also improved from 90.5% in 2023 to 93% in 2024. For comparison, the state average is 92.1.
“The rise in our graduation rate to 93% is the real heart of it all—it’s not just a number; it’s more young people in our community reaching the milestone that opens doors to their future. This progress makes me prouder than ever to be part of a district that is truly committed to seeing every student succeed,” Superintendent Dr. Marlon King said.

From 2021 to 2023, Jackson-Madison County Schools increased student content knowledge across Math, English Language Arts, Social Studies, and Science, reflecting a district-wide commitment to academic growth.
Statewide TCAP results are made available by the Tennessee Department of Education. The data will appear in a user-friendly format in December.
“All the focus statewide has been on 3rd grade due to the retention laws. Looking at the numbers and seeing the achievement growth that has continued, not just in ELA, but in math and science. I think that’s very commendable that our students in 3rd grade continue to be well-rounded and everything is going up on the academic stairstep,” Board member and JMCSS parent Jason Compton said.
