The Week at a Glance
Letter of the Week
We wrapped up our study letter Mm this week. Be sure to ask your child to sing the "Marvin the Monkey" song. We graphed and patterned M&M’s candies in an ABAB form, made Big Green Monsters, and graphed our favorite kind of muffins. We also participated “group time” this week. During group time, students rotated among five learning centers. Our students did a fabulous job staying on task these centers and working cooperatively. This is rare this early in the school year. You should be very proud of your child! Collectively, their favorite group time activity was making edible “Mouse Paint.” Ask your child to explain this. Next week we will be studying the letter Aa. To this point, students should be able to read the sight words "I," "can," and "the." These activities represent the following kindergarten Indiana Academic Standards.
- Read common high-frequency words by sight (e.g., a, my).
- Demonstrate understanding that print moves from left to right across the page and from top to bottom.
- Recognize that written words are made up of sequences of letters.
- Recognize that words are combined to form sentences
- Identify and name all uppercase (capital) and lowercase letters of the alphabet
Math
Over the next few weeks we will continue number recognition 0-10. We will also continue learning to write the numbers. Help your child at home by counting simple objects. It benefits children at this developmental stage to touch each object as it is being counted. We are continuing to study ABAB patterns. By ABAB, we mean a pattern such as this: circle, square, circle, square. . . . or red, blue, red, blue. . . . The students get daily practice on this type of activity during their morning “Workshop” as they string colored beads repeating a selected pattern numerous times. When our shape unit comes to a conclusion, the KinderKids should be able to name all of the shapes. This week's activities address the following standards:
- Write whole numbers from 0 to 20 and recognize number words from 0 to 10. Represent a number of objects with a written numeral 0-20 (with 0 representing a count of no objects).
- Say the number names in standard order when counting objects, pairing each object with one and only one number name and each number name with one and only one object. Understand that the last number name said describes the number of objects counted and that the number of objects is the same regardless of their arrangement or the order in which they were counted.
- Count up to 20 objects arranged in a line, a rectangular array, or a circle. Count up to 10 objects in a scattered configuration. Count out the number of objects, given a number from 1 to 20.
“All About Me” Bags
The “All About Me” bags were simply wonderful. We enjoyed listening to the children tell about those things near and dear to their hearts. Everyone did a fabulous job explaining each and every item in the bags. Thank you for supporting your child’s learning at home.
Your child will continue to have his or her weekly "share day," but all students will be asked to bring an item that starts with the letter we are studying each Tuesday.
Box Tops
In today's Friday folder I've sent a Clipped Box Tops paper that can be used to affix Box Tops. This program is very profitable for LES and we do so appreciate your participation.
Classroom Environment
I am so pleased to report to you that the KinderKids’ behavior is starting to contribute to a wonderful learning environment. Most students truly understand what it takes to make school a place where all children can learn. For those students that have needed extra reminders, I appreciate your support more than you’ll ever know. Your follow-up means the world. We are gearing up for a wonderful year!!!!!
