QUOTES OF THE WEEK
"How we engage students in their own learning should be a team effort. If what we’re doing as part of our family-community engagement strategies is not directly related to student learning, it doesn’t count as a family-community engagement strategy; it’s as simple as that,”
---Joe Mazza, Director of Innovation and Educational Leadership, University of Pennsylvania
"Finding the delicate balance of autonomous support can be hard for parents and teachers, especially when teens are struggling to find out who they are,”
---Sanee Bell MS Principal
A Note from the Principal . . . .
At Day we are busy preparing to welcome parents and caregivers to our Back to School Night this Thursday. This year, however, it feels a bit different. Because of the barriers to home/school connections created by the pandemic, parents and faculty alike seemed to have a renewed appreciation for the value and importance of coming together, meeting in person to discuss the children in our care.
In past years we have prepared for Back to School Night as if "preparing the house for occasional visitors", and Back to School Night was like a holiday or special occasion. When the opportunities to gather together as a community were temporarily taken from us during the pandemic, we learned to appreciate their value and importance even more. Through virtual learning and the technology of Zoom, parents and caregivers were given a front row seat to the teacher skill and dedication behind every lesson with every child. Teachers in turn leaned heavily on parents for home support and education for what was a far from perfect distance model of education. The mutuality of our respect strengthened through this unexpected period of challenge, and now, as we plan our second in person Back to School Night post-pandemic, it is a if we are preparing to gather with colleagues and friends who have the mutual interest of educating and caring for the children of Day. Our collaboration and appreciation for each other's role in the education and care of our children has certainly deepened over the past few years, and yet the learning and social emotional needs of our children have grown greatly.
This Thursday will be just the first of many opportunities to invite you to what we hope you will consider just as much your community, as ours- the place where your children will spend a great deal of time this year, learning, grappling, and growing. While middle school children at times will look to push you away, declaring the rightful dependence of adolescence, we will be pulling you in closer and inviting you into the spaces where we know you are urgently needed.
We look forward to welcoming you all this Thursday to your school community and launching the year long journey and partnership together.
