A Fond Farewell to Our Vice Principal
With bittersweet emotions, we say goodbye to our incredible Vice Principal, Ms. McLean, as she embarks on a well-deserved retirement. With over 25 years of dedication to education, she has touched the lives of countless students, staff, and families.
Though she has only been with us at Burnet Middle School for this school year, her impact has been immeasurable here at Burnet and throughout her years in district. Her kind heart, unwavering support, and beautiful soul have brightened our days and uplifted our school community in ways we will never forget.
We are sad to see her go, but we are beyond grateful for the time weβve had with her. Ms. McLean, we wish you nothing but happiness, relaxation, and joy in this next chapter of your life. Thank you for everything!

Exciting News at Burnet Middle School!
We are thrilled to announce that Ms. Korb, our beloved Leadership teacher, has been appointed as the new Vice Principal at Burnet Middle School! After six years of inspiring and educating students in her classroom, Ms. Korb is stepping into this new role, and we couldnβt be more excited for her and the future of our school.
Ms. Korbβs journey in education started after she graduated from Union High School, where she grew up and attended school since the 3rd grade. She later spent four years at Union High School, teaching Marketing and Computers before coming to Burnet Middle School.
In addition to her teaching role, Ms. Korb has been the Title 1 Coordinator for the past two years and has served as one of our dedicated Play Unified coaches for the last six years. Her commitment to supporting all students, both academically and personally, has made her an invaluable member of our school community.
We are confident that Ms. Korbβs passion for education and her deep roots in the Union community will bring fresh perspectives and positive leadership to her new role. Please join us in congratulating Ms. Korb on this exciting new chapter in her career! We look forward to the great things she will continue to do for Burnet Middle School and its students

Science with Mr. Lama
"Imagine sewage spilling into a pond. The pond water is contaminated and highly acidic.
The 6th-grade science students were challenged to design a water filtration system that improves water quality, making it safer for people and animals to drink.
Using household materials like aquarium gravel, charcoal, sand, and coffee filters, students built their own filters. They also gathered data on the waterβs appearance, odor, and pH before and after filtration.
This hands-on project helped students apply the scientific method while developing problem-solving and collaboration skills."
English with Miss Kowalskie
My name is Miss Kowalskie and I teach 6th grade English! We are currently studying Unit 3, which is all about modern technology and how it can both help and harm us in today's society. Instead of a traditional essay, we got into teams of 4-5 and debated against each other in terms of the "pros" and "cons" technology. The students utilized their new knowledge of argumentative skills and applied it to their own individual speech, in which they presented in front of the class. The students were also assisted by Mrs. Haqq in the library, who taught them how to properly find and cite evidence as well as learn how to know if a source is credible or not. All in all, it was a successful day with strong points from both the "pro" and "con" teams. Finding new ways to assess students has been the most exciting part of this job. Although essays and tests are necessary in collecting data, if I have the opportunity to try something new, I will always do my best to make that happen. The students demonstrated teamwork, proved their understanding of argumentative material, and most importantly, they had FUN.
Library Suite
Emily Macleod, the Head of Youth Services at the Union Public Library, joined us once again to celebrate Women's History Month. During the event, students created Morse Code bracelets and completed crack-the-code worksheets in honor of the American and British women who played key roles in breaking important codes during WWII. We also read several books, including Can You Crack the Code? A Fascinating History of Ciphers and Cryptography. Students were encouraged to design their own codes, which they had a great time doing.
As part of our month-long celebration, students chose a female historical figure to learn about and then complete a stickers-by-number picture related to their chosen figure.
Mrs. Raffaele's reading class continues its weekly trips to the library as we work our way through the exciting thriller A Study in Charlotte.
