Message from Superintendent Scott Hough
We have made tremendous progress with our Investing In Our Future initiative! It is very exciting to see the District's vision come to life after years of hard work. I want to thank everyone for your ongoing patience and flexibility as construction continues across some of our schools. Below are current updates to the projects related to the initiative:
- Brayton Elementary School: The window installation and concrete work are complete.
- LCJSMS: The addition and renovations are 90% complete. The contractor is still working on completing the Wellness Center, HVAC work in the cafeteria, and punch list items.
- Summit High School: The renovations on the Media Center addition are moving along. The project completion date is targeted for April 2025. The dance studio, drama room, and chorus room are set to be open for students by the end of February.
- Tatlock Field House: Bids are due and will be opened on February 13, 2025.
In addition to the construction, additional STEAM courses are being developed for implementation in the 2025-2026 school year at the Middle and High School. We are excited to see the progress continue!

PEP Program Accepting Applications
The PEP Program, a college-access organization offering academic and social-emotional support and college tuition assistance, is now accepting applications for the 2025-2026 school year. The program seeks motivated and eligible sixth-grade Lawton C. Johnson Summit Middle School students to apply. The application deadline is Friday, January 31, 2025.
According to PEP Program Executive Director Maria Shepard Mendez, the program “can be transformative for students who are achievement-oriented and community-minded.” She noted that PEP “offers a comprehensive support system that includes subject-specific tutoring, study skills coaching, test preparation, social-emotional development, cultural enrichment, and college guidance” for middle and high school students. After high school graduation, she added, “We provide ongoing support, helping students navigate college and prepare for their careers.”
Students and their parents or guardians must complete an application to be considered for the program. The application helps PEP staff assess each applicant’s potential for success and ensures the program matches each student's academic and personal growth needs. “Students who thrive in PEP are committed to continual academic improvement, personal growth, and community service. They are willing to step out of their comfort zones and actively participate in new experiences,” said Shepard Mendez.
Current sixth-grade students at Lawton C. Johnson Summit Middle School interested in learning more about the PEP Program or applying are encouraged to visit https://www.pepprogramnj.org/ or contact the program office at 908-277-1106. An information session for parents and guardians will be held on Thursday, January 23, 2025.
SEF Grants in Action
Lawton C. Johnson Summit Middle School was able to hold an advisory assembly for our 6th and 7th grade students through the generous grant funded by the Summit Educational Foundation. On Thursday, January 9, Sgt. Thomas Rich from the Summit Police Department spoke to our students about internet safety and security. Through his dynamic and engaging approach, Sgt. Rich was able to discuss relevant and important concerns surrounding cell phone and internet use. Some topics covered in his presentation were setting safety controls on devices, location tracking, safe communication, and cyberbullying. We look forward to the continued partnership as we navigate these topics!

SHS Theatre Arts Program Hosts Service Event to Support The Trevor Project
On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the company of Summit High School’s spring musical, The Prom, worked with community members to assemble paper corsages at the Summit Community Center. Students traded their scripts, headsets, and instruments for hot glue guns, ribbons, and silk flowers, and the room full of volunteers made more than 400 colorful corsages that will be sold at upcoming performances of The Prom. All proceeds of this sale will support The Trevor Project, a nonprofit dedicated to providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to LGBTQ+ youth.
Based on true events, The Prom tells the story of Emma, a high school student who incites controversy in her small Indiana town when she tries to take her girlfriend to the prom. Her story attracts both the attention of the media and of four eccentric out-of-work Broadway actors who decide to rally around Emma’s cause. As they work to fight injustice and give Emma the prom she deserves, the entire community learns lessons about love, acceptance, and empathy.
Performances of The Prom will be held in the Summit High School Auditorium Wednesday, February 26 at 6 pm and Thursday, February 27 through Saturday, March 1 at 7 pm. For tickets, visit https://cur8.com/projects/hilltopper. Corsages will be on sale for $5 each.
