Northern Southland College
Newsletter - Term 3 Week 8
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
16 September 2022
Kia ora koutou
Earlier this week we sent a message out on the NSC app regarding the new long-term strategy for COVID-19. The very positive news is that household contacts of a person with COVID-19 do not need to isolate, but instead are asked to complete a RAT test each day, for five days.
Therefore, ākonga who are household contacts but test negative and do not have COVID-19 symptoms, should continue to attend. It is the best place for them to be so they can be engaged in their learning, and connected with their teachers, classmates and friends.
Information on how to get RAT kits can be found here: Request a RAT– Ministry of Health.
Mask wearing is no longer required at school or on school transport. All the other recommended public health measures will stay in place as we know they reduce the spread of infectious illnesses including COVID-19. These include ensuring our indoor spaces are well-ventilated, maintaining good hand hygiene, encouraging everyone to cough or sneeze into elbows and, most importantly, staying home and getting tested if they have COVID-19 symptoms. Thank you for your ongoing support in protecting our community.
Best wishes to our senior students who are halfway through their mock exams. Exams will conclude on Tuesday. Students who do not have exams to sit and/or do not study well at home are welcome to attend school where they will be in supervised study.
As seniors have five school weeks remaining, it is important that they use their time wisely by finishing any available internal standards and preparing thoroughly for external assessments.
Please note that NSC will be closed on Monday 26 September as it is Queen Elizabeth II Memorial Day.

COVID-19 UPDATE
You’ll be aware that New Zealand will move to a new, long-term approach to COVID-19. These changes have been made based on public health advice and reflect high levels of immunity and declining case numbers across New Zealand. This new approach will only result in minor changes to the way we operate.

Peak to Peak - 10 September
Congratulations to our 2 NSC PEAK TO PEAK teams for smashing the course last Saturday.
This epic event starts at the top of The Remarkables with a ski or snowboard to then tag a mountain biker who descends the access road and bikes to Frankton Beach. The third team member kayaks along Lake Wakatipu to main beach in Queenstown. The fourth person runs from there to the base of Coronet Peak before handing over to the lucky last person who bikes up the Coronet Peak access road.
Both our teams represented NSC extremely well with the Year 10 team placing 3rd. Thank you to the parents for supporting our students and to Miss Culberson for stepping up to kayak with the Year 10 team.
