Mr. Mauck's Musings
Congratulations to Lainee Blome and Mrs. Amy Rasche JHS's Student and Staff of the Week winners. Good luck to all of our Symphonic and Concert Band students with their solo and ensemble performances. They have been working very hard the last few weeks. Our wrestling team will be competing for a Sectional title at 9 am Saturday in Southridge's Memorial Gym. Good luck to our grapplers. The girls basketball team capped off the season and Senior night with a huge win 66-25 win over Harrison. The girls will play Vincennes on Tuesday at home to open Sectional play. The boy's basketball team has two games this week, Friday at NE Dubois and Saturday at home against New Albany. The JHS girls swimming team fresh off a SIAC championship will swim for a sectional title next Saturday with prelims on Thursday evening. Both meets will be in the Jasper Natatorium. The boys bowling team placed first in Regional to advance to Semi State in Terre Haute this Saturday, February 1st. Also advancing in individual competition are Kaleb Wendholt, Todd Dick and Greta Weisheit. Good luck and punch your ticket to state.
JHS was privileged to have Officer David Gomez speak to the student body on Monday. Crisis Connection and the Rotary Club teamed together to bring Office Gomez from Idaho to speak on the dangers of social media and bullying. Officer did a wonderful job engaging with the students. Several of our students went to Scales lake to support the Polar Plunge event. The water was a balmy 38 degrees as our students took the plunge to help the Special Olympics. On Thursday evening, New York Times best-selling author, educator and prevention coach Jessica Lahey will give a free presentation for adults, “Learn What Your Kids Already Know: Raising Kids in a Substance-Glamorizing World.” The presentation is sponsored by Dubois County CARES and is set for 7 p.m. at the Jasper Arts Center, 951 College Ave. With your attendance, you will have the opportunity to vote for our seventh-grade class to win $200.
Riley Dance Marathon team is holding a garage sale on Saturday, Feb. 2nd at Cabby O'Neil Gym from 10-2 with all money raised supporting Riley Hospital. The Jasper Mayor's Youth Leadership Council is having a burger fund raiser at Culvers on Feb. 18 from 5-8 to create a sand volleyball court at Buehler Park. JHS has a new club for students to explore friendships, faith and a deeper meaning of life. The Unity in Faith club held its callout meeting today. I was able to attend Charla y Chocolate during homeroom today. Students make hot chocolate and discuss topics in Spanish to improve their conversational Spanish. It was exciting to see native Spanish speakers interacting with our advanced Spanish students in conversation all in Spanish. Kudos to Mrs. Megan Johnson on creating this opportunity for our students.
Have a great weekend and Go Cats!

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid site is now open for Students and Parents to complete their applications for next year. Any student considering attending college should complete the FAFSA to be eligible for financial assistance. I would encourage all families to fill out a application regardless of need as many colleges require FAFSA completion for all types of assistance. Many schools require submission for competitive non-need based scholarships or grants. The application is much easier than in the past. Click on the link for more information and to complete your application. FAFSA
