GATE Pull-Out Program Newsletter
November 2024
Where is GATE taking us?
Curriculum
The year is 2030 and the United States Government has just announced the creation of a new program called Cosmic Cadets. The goal of the program is to prepare a handful of children to enter outer space for the first time. The word astronaut comes from the Greek words meaning “star sailor” and that is exactly what students will become in our 2nd Quarter Unit, Astronaut Academy.
Students will imagine what life in space would be like while participating in a problem-based learning scenario created by the National Association for Gifted Children curriculum award winner, Dr. Jason McIntosh, and adapted by the TUSD GATE Program. In this scenario, NASA has launched a series of challenges to help determine who will be the lucky astronauts. The challenges will test their physical fitness, mental intelligence, adaptability, and teamwork skills.
Once selected for the mission, the commander will guide the students through a simulation that will prepare them for launch, life in micro gravity, and landing. Buckle up and get ready for the ride of a lifetime!
November Standards
GS1 Students will develop critical thinking skills unique to several disciplines in both cognitive and affective areas.
GS5. Students will develop leadership and interpersonal communication skills necessary for positive peer relationships and social interactions.
