Wiggin Street Parent Update
April 5, 2024
Better Together
Dear Wiggin Street Families,
The excitement is in the air with the upcoming solar eclipse. Dr. Holzer visited 3rd grade to share about the eclipse and how it can affect the eyes. The video has been shared with all grades to be added to lessons developed in preparation. All students have been given an eclipse viewer card this week and some may be in their grade card envelopes going home today. Although this is a calamity day, it is a great lesson of scientific observation of the eclipse and how it affects nature.
You will find below details regarding the Spring Fun Festival that will be April 19th. We are still in need of volunteers and the link to the sign up is provided. This is a great time for all and the community is invited.
We are in the middle of our Spring flower sale, and it's so nice that the flowers are being delivered prior to Mother's Day. Also, you will find information about the upcoming construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Route 229 and Wiggin Street. This construction will require road closure between May 28th and November 2024. Please read the article below to learn how to maneuver around the closure.
Best wishes,
Christy Grandstaff
Solar Eclipse Calamity Day
Mount Vernon City Schools will not be in session on Monday, April 8. Have your solar viewers ready for a once-in-a-lifetime event in Ohio on Monday, April 8! An extremely rare celestial event will occur in our skies: a solar eclipse where Mount Vernon will be in the path of totality.
Starting at approximately 1:56 p.m., the moon will begin to pass between the Earth and the sun. The total event will last for roughly 2 hours and 31 minutes. However, totality will begin at 3:13 p.m., casting a shadow over our area for nearly two minutes.
Mount Vernon City Schools will not be in session on Monday, April 8, to allow students to view the eclipse safely with family. While traditional classes may not be in session, the learning doesn't have to stop! There are many online activities and resources to explore the science and significance of solar eclipses. Parents, we encourage you to join in the excitement by discussing the eclipse with your children and exploring educational resources together.
Remember to view the solar eclipse safely. Please ensure that you and your family use the eclipse viewer card sent home with your student or approved solar viewing glasses to protect your eyes. Read the attachment for safety information from NASA Science.
Together, let's make the most of this remarkable opportunity to view one of the wonders of our universe!

Our Spring Flower Sale is in full swing and runs April 1-15th. You should have received an email from Fortmeyer with a shopping link. Flower pick up at Wiggin Street will be on May 6th which is just before Mother's Day.
Roundabout Construction Begins June 1st and Road Closure
Please read this article regarding the roundabout construction at the intersection of Route 229 and Wiggin Street that will require road closure.
Village council has scheduled a special session for Monday April 22nd at 7pm to update the community regarding the construction between May 28 and November and how travel will be impacted to and from the village. All parents and staff are welcome to attend. There will be an opportunity for the public to ask questions. Please send questions prior to the meeting, so Council has a better chance to prepare and provide the most accurate information. People can attend in person at the community center or over zoom. The village website will have all the information.
We love Mrs. Stetler!
Throughout the day yesterday, students let Mrs. Stetler know how much they appreciate her. Mrs. Treber's class made her a bouquet of flowers.
Grades 3-5 Ohio State Testing Dates
Please keep these dates in mind when scheduling appointments for April. Make-up testing takes some of our educators away from intervention instruction, so we like to limit it as much as possible.
3rd-5th Grade ELA Ohio State Test: April 17 & 18
5th Grade Science Ohio State Test: April 23 & 24
3rd-5th Grade Math Ohio State Test: April 30 & May 1
This site for students and families has lots of great information about the state test and 3rd grade Reading Guarantee as well as practice tests.
State Testing Tips for Students
- Get enough sleep beforehand
- Eat a healthy breakfast
- Stick with regular routines
- Remain positive and have a growth mindset
*We have had some students lately coming to school with fake fingernails. They can be challenging to type with them on in the regular classroom, but we especially ask that they are not worn on testing days. We appreciate your help with this.
Matia Mathews, Senior Retail Business Development Officer with Park National Bank, Visits 3rd Grade
Matia Mathews, Senior Retail Business Development Officer with Park National Bank, visited 3rd grade this week to speak with students about money, savings, and budgeting. One of the 3rd grade Social Studies Economic Standards states that a budget is a plan to help people make personal economic decisions for the present and future and to become more financially responsible.
Congratulations, Caroline Biggerstaff!
The following post from the Knox County Fair announced yesterday that Caroline's art work was selected to feature as the cover of the 175th Knox County Fair, Fair Book Cover!
