This week has just flown by and I know the next two will go quickly as well. This time of year can be hectic juggling family schedules, regular to-do lists, as well as holiday to-do lists. My own children and I were just talking about some of their favorite memories from elementary school and they each remembered the fun activities from winter holiday time. My son makes sure to set out his sock & rice snowman every year. He remembers me helping in his classroom in second grade when we made them. There will be so many opportunities to enjoy the season – maybe even some hot chocolate and cookies this weekend.

We were lucky to have Mr. Miller, the Mayor of Roswell and Councilmember Hills here today for career day. They wanted all our families to know there is a holiday celebration tonight in downtown Roswell. You can check out the city website for more details. https://www.roswellgov.com/

I wanted to also thank everyone who came to school today to share their careers with our Northwood Explorers to spark curiosity for so many unique career opportunities. The students were curious and excited and the presenters were all engaging and energetic! Thank you to Mrs. Weeks, our school counselor, for organizing the day. It was fantastic!

As a reminder, due to the run off election being held at many FCS school campuses, including Northwood, Tuesday, December 6th will be a Remote Day for students and staff. Additional details and plans for the day will come from homeroom teachers for next Tuesday.

I know this weekend is also a big sports weekend – there will be MANY teams to cheer on, starting with the USA vs Netherlands tomorrow morning, the SEC game tomorrow afternoon for which I know many people will be watching to cheer on Georgia or LSU. Late tomorrow evening, the Purdue Boilermakers play the Michigan Wolverines in the Big Ten Championship – I’ll be wearing my lucky Purdue sweatshirt hoping for a miracle. Mr. Pearch and his family will be cheering as loud as they can, wanting the Wolverines to get the win. One of us will come back to school on Monday with a big smile.

The school year is flying by, and we are having a terrific time in second grade. Our field trip to CNC was so much fun! The children learned all about how the Creek and Cherokee Native Americans lived. We went on a hike, viewed animals, and toured the museum. Thank you everyone who came to our Thanksgiving Feast. We enjoyed seeing you all and it meant a lot to the children. This week, second graders are working on completing their IReady Diagnostics. Everyone is working hard and doing a great job!

A VISITOR FROM THE PAST

Third graders got the opportunity to participate in "The Adventures of Hernando de Soto as told by Survivor Juan Carlos Rodriguez." The students learned about the true adventure story of Conquistador Hernando de Soto’s exploration of La Florida, into Georgia, the entire Southeastern United States, and ending at the mouth of the Mississippi River, where he met his death.

The Teaching Museum provides hands-on educational exhibits and arts-based programming that engage students in the Humanities, Language Arts, Mathematics, Sciences, and Fine Arts, with the goal of improving student achievement. It goes all the way up to 8th grade! Mrs. Gibson even got into the action—what a good sport!

Our PBIS celebration for November was glow in the dark bowling, and it sure was a blast! Students had a great time bowling with friends, listening to music, and dancing in between turns. This reward was right up their alley! Students earned glow bowling for earning gold slips throughout the month of November. Gold slips can be earned for being respectful, responsible, and engaged. There are opportunities to earn these EVERYWHERE in the school. Ask your explorer if they earned a gold slip this week!

Clothing Donations

Accidents happen - in the classroom, at recess, at lunch or the bathroom. When our Explorers get messy they often head to the Clinic to get cleaned up. We keep extra clothes on hand for those quick changes and appreciate donations of all clothing sizes. If you have any clothing items you'd like to contribute you can send them in with your student or drop them off at the front desk.

24-Hour Rule

As several viral illnesses like the flu, RSV, and COVID-19 are going around, we would like to remind you to keep your students home if they have symptoms like sore throat, runny nose, cough and congestion, fever and chills, vomiting, and diarrhea. Students may return to school after their symptoms have improved and they have been fever free without medicine for 24 hours. The 24-hour rule also applies to vomiting and diarrhea.

The Infinite Campus Parent Portal provides quick and easy access to information for all enrolled students in their household. Find grades, attendance, assignments, schedules, ID numbers, school announcements and more. If you haven't already joined, please do so today as Fulton County Schools is transitioning to managing everything via the portal.

Parents, please encourage your students to check regularly for lost items in the Lost and Found. Please mark all student belongings clearly with the child’s name so that it can be identified. Unclaimed items are donated to local charities after the last school day of every month. December’s date is Thursday, December 15th.

Help spread holiday joy to local families in need. Bring a new, unwrapped toy to the school lobby and put it in the marked boxes starting Tuesday, November 29th. Last day to donate is Monday, December 12th. All toys will be donated to North Fulton Community Charities (NFCC). We were overwhelmed with our Northwood community last year. Let’s do even more this year and spread a little cheer!
