Lockdown Drill
We will be doing our first semester lockdown drill some time this week. During the lockdown drill there will be no access to enter or exit the building. The drill will last no more then 15 minutes. All teachers reviewed the purpose and procedures for a lock down drill with students this week. This is also a great time to discuss this topic with your students at home. We will send out a message letting you know we completed the lockdown drill after it is finished.
CHAP
It's time once again for the Community Holiday Assistance Program. At Thanksgiving, families may receive a meal kit that includes a precooked turkey, so they can prepare a Thanksgiving meal. At Christmas, families are invited to “shop” through the selection of gifts for each of their children up to age 18, and they receive a grocery card. Last year CHAP served 433 families representing 718 children.
Watch this short 2 minute video to learn more.
Community Holiday Assistance - 2024 Dates, 2023 Impact
This year’s deadline for applications is November 18 for both Christmas & Thanksgiving. We encourage you to get your applications in early, as they are limited to 300 meals at Thanksgiving. They can accommodate more families at Christmas, so families applying after they receive the first 300 applications will be put on a waiting list for Thanksgiving and will be served at Christmas. Please use the link below to complete the google form application.
If you have questions, or find it difficult to complete the application form, please contact Dr. Lori Brown, TAE school counselor, for help. Her email is: lori_brown@pender.k12.nc.us

Pender County Strategic Planning
Over the next several months, Pender County Schools will embark on creating its next strategic plan. This plan will guide our efforts over the next five years, setting a clear direction, aligning our efforts, and holding us accountable to PCS students, staff, and families. We hope that it will reflect our community’s goals for our students and inform how we prepare each student for their future.
We know that to truly reflect the will of our community, this process must be inclusive of a wide range of perspectives. Gathering this range of perspectives starts with a survey for students, teachers, and community members. Please take the time to provide your valuable input by filling out this survey. Your input is valued and appreciated.
Flu Shots
The Pender County Health Department will once again be coming to our schools to offer the annual influenza vaccine for students in grades K-12 and school staff. This is an opportunity for your child to receive the flu shot at school as a convenience, if you choose. TAES's day is Oct. 30th. Consent forms are due by Oct 18.
This year you have the option of completing a paper consent form, or an online digital consent form. If you wish to complete a paper consent form, please ask your school for a copy to be sent home. No one will receive a vaccine without a completed consent form.

STEM
As you know, we added an additional specials class this year, STEM. Students are absolutely loving it. Our PTA major fundraising project this year is to furnish and get equipment for the room. We are currently in the design and ordering process and should have all of our new furniture and items arrive around November.
In the mean time we are looking to get some support for the consumables used for all the experiments and projects worked on in class. Here is our STEM teacher's wish list for those who would like to support the progra:

Transportation Changes
If your student has a change in transportation that is different then then normal, please take the following steps:
- Send in writing (handwritten note, email, rooms message) to your child's teaching
- If you do not get a response by 12 pm the day the change is needed, please call the front office. We will still ask you to send it in writing, but we will be sure the teacher gets the information
- No student can ride a bus other then the bus they are assigned to
- No student can ride a bus with a friend unless they are assigned to that bus
Attendance
In order to streamline attendance, this year we will be receiving attendance excuse notes electronically, not paper copies.
All excuse notes should be sent to tae_attendance@pender.k12.nc.us
This includes doctors notes, parent notes, etc. This allows us to make sure all excuse notes get to where they need to be. It also allows families to have documentation that they sent in their notes instead of things getting lost.
It is still best practice to communicate with the teacher in the event of the absence to ensure students have all necessary make up work, but you do not need to give the teacher the excuse note.
Please review Board Policy 4400 for the full attendance policy and to ensure you are up to date on what constitutes and excused absence. It can be found here:
