Maplewood Memo
May 1, 2024
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Dear Maplewood Families,
Can you believe today is May 1st? A teacher described this day like being at the top of a roller coaster and beginning the descent. I love that analogy - these next few weeks are going to fly by! Be sure to mark your calendars with the important dates listed below.
Successful School Survey:
Please see the section below about the Successful School Survey. It is very important that families take this survey seriously as it truly does guide the work we do right here at Maplewood. Our school improvement goal is tied to this survey and we will use the data to see how we have progressed and to determine our next steps for the 24-25 school year.
Volunteer Tea:
One major part of Maplewood that makes us so amazing is our parent volunteers. Every year we have a volunteer tea. This year it is going to be on June 3rd from 7:50 - 8:30 in the library. If you are a volunteer, join us for some tea and treats to thank you for your generous gift of time. Please RSVP HERE for the Volunteer Tea.
Lock Down Drill:
We are required to practice a lock-down drill twice a year. Once in the fall and once in the spring. During this drill, we simulate the need to lock all the doors and have the students sit on the floor out of sight. This year, Mrs. Cunningham will be working with classes before the drill to read a story about Sammy and Friends, Crittertopia, the Critter Elders, and how to do a
Lockdown, “Locks, Lights, Out of Sight,” in a trauma-informed and developmentally appropriate way. This drill will occur on May 16th at 9:15. For more information, please see THIS document about lock down lessons and drill.
Field day:
Now that the end of the school year is right around the corner, it's time to think about FIELD DAY! We'll have the K-2 field day in the morning (8:45-10:45 for volunteers) and 3-5 in the afternoon (12:05-2:00 for volunteers). It's scheduled for Friday, June 7 and our raincheck day is Monday, June 10th. Please click HERE to sign up to volunteer. Please add your child's name in the comments. Field day will be stations where students move around with their class. If spaces fill up, email me and I'll be happy to find a job for you.
Staffing:
As staffing takes shape for next year, I will be sure to share any updates and changes. The newest change came last week from our wonderful school secretary, Shannon Riley. Shannon’s husband is retiring and she would like to have a more flexible schedule by substituting next year so she will be leaving us as our school secretary. Hopefully we will have her sub for us often! She has been a dear part of our school community for years, beginning as an Educational Assistant and will be greatly missed. Shannon shared that she “loves the Maplewood Community and is continually impressed with our incredibly hard working and loving staff here at Maplewood.” Shannon lives close by, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled for opportunities to say hi!
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please reach out. I can’t fix it if I don’t know about it. 🙂
Warmly,
Kit

Successful School Survey
Each year, we gather student, staff, and family feedback through the Successful Schools Survey. The results help our school understand the needs of your students, staff, and families, as well as support the development of your school continuous improvement plans (SCIP). We want to hear from you! Your voice matters! On May 6th, the survey window opens. Be on the lookout for emails and texts with the link to the survey. Thanks!

Cafeteria/Nutrition
A reminder that breakfast and lunch is now FREE to ALL students at Maplewood! If your child has not had a meal with me before, I can walk them through the process. Students are very helpful showing new kids how to go through the line also. Even if they have breakfast at home, they can get breakfast here and use it for snack later. Please remember, milk is NOT free unless getting the whole meal.
As we near the end of the school year I will need to be using up things in my freezer. So, there may be days when I serve 20 burgers, for example, with whatever is the main menued item that day. If the main menu is different, I will try to get notice out. I just letting you know there may be days when I have small amounts to offer. Not everyone will get that offer but everyone will still get the menued options.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Thanks for your support.
