Important Dates and Swimming
Term 4 - 16 October 2024
The below information is provided as a reminder to our families of what was published in 2023 regarding swimming and parent help with swimming starting today for some hubs:
Clarification of Swimming & Parent Help
This approach has been collaboratively agreed between our staff and Board. As far as possible, we have taken into account the safety and dignity of our children of all ages, the safety of our very much appreciated parent help, and the diverse needs of our student community.
Before outlining our approach to parental assistance, it may be helpful to note that students change for swimming in designated, separate changing rooms for boys and girls, they do not change with members of the public.
Parent help is to:
- support sensible behaviour and speedy changing if necessary in the change rooms
- assist with dressing for our youngest students
- provide additional poolside supervision for safety.
The number of parents assisting in the change rooms is dependent on age and will be decided by the hub teachers and communicated to the parents. Older students usually require less, or no, assistance.
As far as possible, parents helping in each changing room will be the same gender as the students and, over several swimming sessions, the same parents.
When entering the change rooms, any adult warns students they are entering, with a short pause before doing so.
One police vetted member of staff - a teacher or teacher aide - will be moving between both change rooms at any time that parents are assisting.
For our older students or those who require this, private changing can be requested. Please understand that, if we have many students requesting this, the time taken to move them through the limited number of private change rooms may result in them missing some of their allocated swimming time.
Teachers will set clear expectations with students about behaviour to support minimum adult supervision in the changing rooms. This may require those students who are unable to follow these in the group changing area to change in an alternate space/at an alternate time to their peers.
