From the Director
Dear CDS Families,
Term 3 is now in full swing and students are making the most of their experience at CDS Middle School despite the gloomy weather and concerns over the coronavirus. The student council is busy planning for Spirit Week and Valentine's Day; table tennis and volleyball teams are still practicing even though games have been canceled/postponed, and teachers persist in facilitating authentic learning and discovery in their classes!
I'd like to reassure you that CDS continues to take every reasonable precaution to ensure the health and safety of our community in response to the Novel Coronavirus. We remain in close communication with other international schools in Korea, as well as the Ministry of Education, and we will continue to align our safety measures. A letter was issued from the school last week detailing our safety response and policies regarding those who've been at risk of exposure. I've included an updated summary of this letter below for your reference.
We will continue to provide updates as necessary throughout the week. Please know that the health and safety of our community is a first priority. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Middle School division office.
Have a great week!
Benjamin Scoville
Director of Middle School
School Precautions Regarding the Novel Coronavirus
Any MS student who is at risk of contracting the virus is asked to not attend school for two weeks since the risk of exposure, and obviously should only return if there are no symptoms of being ill
E.g. if someone traveled to China and returned to Korea on Jan. 8, two weeks have passed as of Jan. 22, and the person can then return to school
Risk of exposure includes the following two main categories:
Those who have traveled to China, Macao or Hong Kong; or
Those who, within the last two weeks, have hosted (or had significant interactions with) someone who has been to China (including Macao and Hong Kong).
Fortunately, no MS teachers were at risk of exposure. Teachers in FP and HS who were at risk of being exposed will remain at home for the time being, and their classes will continue to be covered by substitutes.
Please note that those teachers are not experiencing symptoms of the coronavirus, and are very much looking forward to returning to school.
For students who have had risk of exposure, please be sure to let us know; we are being asked by the ministry of education to report our data, and it assists us with documenting absences.
All KAIAC inter school activities in the next two weeks are either canceled or postponed
The CDS FP, MS, and HS buildings were professionally disinfected on Jan 27; a company was contracted to come and clean the buildings with a special treatment
All classrooms have been stocked with extra hand sanitizer and all students and teachers are strongly encouraged to wear masks
Students are being asked to frequently wash hands and be extra cautious with germs
MS will frequently check and immediately replenish hygiene items: soap, hand sanitizers, wet wipes, etc.
Posters from the WHO and the KCDC have been posted, especially at building entrances

Dalton Cup Update
The start of Term 3 is a busy time for students, but also a very exciting one for our Dalton Cup competition. We kicked off this term with a challenging, but fun, minute-to-win it game at the start of term assembly. Team Phoenix came out victorious in this competition. When adding all the points so far this school year, below are the totals for our teams.

Details regarding each layer along with drawings of relevant phenomena were included to present an informative picture of the complexities of our planet's dynamic atmosphere. The best designed posters were chosen and are displayed here. Congratulations to the outstanding achievers!

[MS KAIAC Athletics (Upcoming Winter Season)]
Dear Parents /학부모님께,
Please be informed that CDS will postpone collection of the Athletic Fee for Volleyball and Table Tennis until the end of the Winter Season. This decision is in response to many KAIAC jamborees being cancelled as a result of the Coronavirus. Those of you who have already paid the fee may receive a partial reimbursement relative to the number of events that end up being canceled. If you have any questions, please contact our CDS Athletic Coordinator Mr. Monnette: smonette@daltonschool.kr
Best regards,
Mr. Scoville
