Egg Harbor Township High School
Week of September 29, 2024
A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL
Dear EHTHS Families,
It has been a busy week here at EHTHS! We have exciting news to share about the accomplishments of our students and events happening around the school.
We are proud to announce that Tessa Palumbo, a Sophomore in AP Government, represented EHTHS and the State of New Jersey last weekend in Washington, D.C. Tessa was selected out of 500 applicants, joining 34 other talented high school students from across the country to participate in the iCivics Equity in Civics Youth Fellowship (ECYF). This yearlong fellowship helps students develop leadership and communication skills while researching how civic education can become more equitable across the U.S. Tessa’s fellowship started in August and will continue through the 2024-25 school year, including workshops and lectures with experts in the field. We’re incredibly proud of Tessa and wish her the best!
Last Friday night, we celebrated the 25th Anniversary of the Hispanohablantes Program at EHTHS. Over 200 people attended the celebration in the high school’s lower cafeteria. The Hispanohablantes Program is a specialized Spanish course for native Spanish speakers, designed to improve literacy, much like English classes for English-speaking students. The program, which started in 1998 with only 26 students, now serves over 425 students from 5th to 12th grade. We were honored to have alumni from all the program’s years, including several who were featured speakers. Special recognition was given to Mr. Obed Pérez, a dedicated Hispanohablantes teacher for 20 years and to Yamillei Socorro, a beloved former teacher who passed away in 2015. Her children were presented with flowers in her memory. The event closed with a beautiful dance performance by 9th-grade students to "La Pollera Colorá," a traditional Colombian Cumbia. It was a wonderful evening.
Hey Seniors! Don’t forget to regularly check the Guidance Website’s Scholarship Link for updates on scholarship opportunities. Notifications will be sent via the Scoir platform to student emails. Make sure your student is registered with Scoir or checks the scholarship spreadsheet regularly.
On Wednesday, we also took a moment this week to honor our amazing custodial staff on National Custodial Day. We are grateful for the hard work they put in every day to keep our school clean and safe. We also celebrated our tennis and volleyball seniors this week! A big congratulations to them for all of their accomplishments and best of luck to those who will continue to play next year at the collegiate level.
On the activity front, the EHT Hiking Club recently completed a four-mile hike through the rugged terrain of Belleplain State Forest. With 40 hikers exploring creeks, tall pines, and Lake Nummy, it was a perfect day for outdoor adventures. Students learned to spot trail markers and even searched for the bright orange "Chicken of the Woods" fungus.
Our students were fortunate to take part in some field trips this week. Mr. Bell took his AP and Honors African American Studies students to the Harriet Tubman Museum in Cape May, where they learned about New Jersey’s role in the Underground Railroad. Our science students were also treated to a unique experience aboard Atlantic City Cruises on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday to explore the beach, dune structure, and salt marshes, connecting their learning to coastal resiliency and wildlife. Special thank you to Ms. Delaney and Ms. Reilly for writing the grant to make this opportunity possible.
Next week, ticket sales for our Halloween-themed Homecoming Dance begin! Tickets are $10 each and will be sold in the cafeteria during lunches. Senior ticket sales begin on 10/7, juniors on 10/9, sophomores on 10/14, and freshmen on 10/16. Get your tickets early—sales are first come, first served! Mr. Bell and Student Council have been working hard to ensure the students will have a spooky fun night.
Also next week, our National Anthem Project will take place under the direction of Dr. Kadetsky. Join us at the football game on Thursday night against Mainland as our choir students, alongside students from grades 3–8, proudly sing the National Anthem at the start of the game, which begins at 6 p.m.
October is Bullying Prevention Month, and we are focusing on Respect as part of our Stand Tall, Fly High – Say No to Bullying campaign. Events include:
10/7-10/11: Week of Respect – We ask students and staff to wear blue on Monday to raise awareness for bullying prevention.
Daily themes include Mindful Monday, Talk it Out Tuesday, Wellness Wednesday, Thoughtful Thursday, and Friendship Friday.
On 10/11, Ms. Barnes and Ms. DiMattia will host an assembly for 9th and 10th graders with the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office focusing on decision-making, internet safety, and cyberbullying.
Finally, don't forget to sign up for the Tyler Wechsler Foundation Pickleball Tournament on Sunday, October 13. Visit https://www.tylerwechslerfoundation.com/ for more information.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Deaf Awareness Month
Hello all. September is Deaf Awareness month. I thought it would be nice to include some Deaf Awareness info in our schools' newsletters throughout the month of September. Not sure exactly how you'd want to do it, so I'm starting out by sharing these slides with facts about deafness, tips on how to communicate with deaf friends, etc. Let me know if you need anything else from me.

#DAY 1
The High School will be continuing with this bullying-prevention program for this school year!
#DAY1--a staff and student-led philosophy that will serve to foster a building-wide atmosphere of kindness and inclusion.
This program was started a few years ago in Bergen County by the Tyler Clementi Foundation and has gained momentum throughout the state and country for use in schools, community groups, workplaces, and sports teams.
The premise is simple: the adults in the building make a “declaration statement” about behavior that is expected, as well as behavior that is unacceptable, and we all pledge to conduct ourselves accordingly. This includes seeking help when we witness unacceptable behavior occurring.
This notion is called being an #Upstander. Hit "play" below and see for yourself! 🤩
Has your student taken their #Upstander Pledge yet?!?
Have them sign into their school account and click here! 😊

COMMUNITY PRIDE
25th Anniversary celebration of Hispanohablantes Program 9/27/24
More than 200 people packed the lower cafeteria at the High School on Friday, September 27th to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Hispanohablantes program. The Hispanohablantes program is a Spanish course for students who already speak Spanish. Much like English-speaking students take English classes every year in school to improve their literacy skills in English, Spanish-speakers do the same in the Hispanohablantes program. Back in 1998-1999, the first year of the program, there were just 26 students in two sections at the High School. Now, 25 years later, more than 425 students are in the Hispanohablantes program between 5th and 12th grade. Alumni from the early years of the program all the way through the class of 2024 came out for the celebration and several were featured speakers.
Hispanohablantes teachers past and present were recognized for their passion and dedication to their students. In particular, Mr. Obed Pérez, High School Hispanohablantes teacher, was presented with a plaque recognizing his professionalism and dedication to the Hispanohablantes program for the past 20 years. The impact and legacy of Hispanohablantes teacher, Yamillei Socorro, who passed away in 2015 was recognized during the celebration. Her two children, Yellian and Yadelis, were presented with a bouquet of flowers in their mother’s name.
Finally, 9th grade students in Hispanohablantes performed a dance to La Pollera Colorá,a traditional Colombian Cumbia, to the delight of parents and the rest of the audience. A good time was had by all.
