Grade 9 Biology MCAS: June 4-5
Freshmen will be taking the MCAS Biology exam next week on June 4 & 5. This exam is sponsored by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), and is part of the competency determination required for students to graduate from Millis High School. In sophomore year, students take MCAS exams in English Language Arts and Math. All MCAS exams are now computer based.
The MCAS Biology tests will begin promptly at 8am each day, and student classroom assignments will be posted throughout the building (they will also be emailed to the students). Students should come in with their ChromeBooks fully charged each day. Though students have the entire school day to complete testing, each day of testing typically takes 2-3 hours.
Parents/Guardians are asked to make sure their students get a good night's sleep before each exam day, have a good breakfast, and get to school on time each day. We are confident that our students are well-prepared to be successful on these important exams. Thanks to parents/guardians for their support in helping students clear this graduation hurdle. Good luck to our 9th grade students as they take their MCAS Biology Exams on June 4 & 5!

Other Important Info
Yearbooks
Please visit Yearbookordercenter.com to order your yearbook. Use Millis code 5291. Orders must be in by June 7th. Reach out to Mrs. Graham if you have any questions.
Student Health & Permanent Records
With the exception of their Official Transcript, all Student Records (this includes Health records as well as Permanent Records) will be signed for and given to the seniors at graduation practice. These records may contain immunizations and other important information required by many colleges so please keep these records in a safe place. Millis High School does NOT keep copies of these records, or of your diploma. Giving these records to you will serve as their “destruction.” The only record we keep on file is their Official Transcript.
Student Obligations
Students who owe an obligation to the school such as a senior survey, Chromebook, charger, textbooks, athletic uniform, etc. will not receive their cap and gown until the obligation is fulfilled. Students will be advised by the 1st practice if they have any such obligations.
Senior School Emails - Disabled After Graduation
Senior school emails will be disabled during the summer. Seniors will need to create a personal email account and transfer whatever info they want (including changing over any newsletters & notifications you wish to keep) to that new email address. This is fairly simple if it is a Gmail account. To create a new account, click here: https://takeout.google.com/transfer. This is useful if you don’t want to co-mingle school stuff with another personal account. For basic Google account stuff you may need you can click here: https://myaccount.google.com/. If more help is needed you can click here for support: https://support.google.com/mail/answer/21289. Please do this soon as there will not be a reminder before emails are disabled.
Chromebooks and Chargers
Seniors, we have a loaner shortage and could really use your school issued Chromebooks and chargers if you no longer need them. If you have purchased your own device and no longer need your school issued Chromebook and charger, we kindly ask that you return them to the Main Office as soon as possible.
If you are still using your school device, you are welcome to hang onto it until classes, AP exams, and senior projects are completed. However, all school issued equipment must be returned, charged and in good working order before graduation practices begin on Tuesday, June 4th, or you will not receive your cap and gown.
If you have lost or damaged your school issued device, please notify the office as soon as possible. The cost to replace the device is $200.00. Damage to the device will be assessed by our tech team who will notify you of the repair cost if you do not have insurance for your device.
Yearbook ordering is open!

A Special Message From Principal Awdycki
If you know me, you know I can get a bit emotional at times, and as I sit down to write this, there is no question this is one of the more emotional messages I’ve ever sat down to write. When I first came to Millis 17 years ago, I didn’t know much about the town or the schools, but the people I met on my interview, and in my first week getting me acclimated to the school, made me feel like I was home. I’ve spent more than half of my adult life as a part of this “Small School, Big Family”, and though I grew up in Gardner, MA, Millis is my adopted hometown. The staff, students and families that make up this school and town are truly a part of my family.
Coming to MHS first as a school counselor, and then as principal, has changed my life in so many incredible ways that are impossible to put into a few short paragraphs. When I made the decision to move to the role of principal 3 ½ years ago, I was following in the footsteps of one of the best to ever do it, Bob Mullaney. Over the past few years in my role, I’ve worked incredibly hard to continue to build on the excellence of this educational institution. One that is staffed with some of the most incredible educators and professionals you will ever come across. Navigating through COVID times and back to the sense of normalcy we feel today has been quite the journey, and I’ve recently had some time to reflect on where I want to be in both my personal and professional life. As I search to find a little more balance in both, I have made the incredibly difficult decision to step down as Principal of Millis High School at the end of this school year.
In a perfect world, I’d find another position in this school I could just jump into, but that’s just not possible. So, it’s time for me to move on to the next stop on my journey outside of Millis, which I’ll admit, is a little bit scary. When you feel like you’re home, it’s never easy to leave. But what gives me a sense of relief is knowing that whoever comes in to fill my role is walking into one of the best public high schools in Massachusetts, and soon, it will feel like home for them as well. We are fortunate to have extremely talented educators, amazing students, wonderful families, dedicated support staff, a remarkable administrative team, and solid leadership in Superintendent Mullaney. This small school has allowed me to form personal connections and make friendships that I will carry with me throughout the rest of my life, and I can’t tell you how thankful I am for that.
I’ve told Superintendent Mullaney that I will do whatever I can to ensure the transition to new leadership at Millis High School goes as smoothly as possible, and I’ll stay on as long as needed into the summer to make that happen. I want to say thank you to everyone who wrapped their arms around me as part of this, “Small School, Big Family”. Those aren’t just words - that is exactly what this place is. If I listed everyone individually, this message would go on forever, so I’m just going to say, “Thank you.” You have made my family a part of yours for almost two decades, and become my family in the process. I will forever be a Millis Mohawk.
Mark Awdycki
Principal
Hard to Believe, But June is Coming!
It's hard to believe, but we have only 10 full school days left before we head into final exams from June 11-14. We've got a packed schedule over the last three weeks of school. When we return from the long weekend, we'll have our last advisory and flex block of the year, be working to get our final study sessions in with freshmen for the MCAS Biology exam (June 4-5), be preparing to graduate the Class of 2024 (June 6), readying for underclassmen awards (June 10), and reviewing for final exams.
The end of the school year is always a time of reflection for students and staff, and as we head into Memorial Day weekend, please take a moment to reflect on and remember those that have lost their lives defending our country, as well as those that have served and continue to serve. Millis' Memorial Day parade begins at 10am on Monday, May 27, culminating with a ceremony at Veterans Memorial Building/Town Hall at 10:15am. The MHS Band, under the direction of Mrs. Norton, will be participating in this year's events. There will be no school on Monday, May 27, in observance of Memorial Day. We will see everyone back at school on Tuesday, May 28.
American Heritage Museum Field Trip
The entire 10th grade class attended a field trip on Friday, May 24th to the American Heritage Museum. The military museum explores conflicts ranging from the Revolutionary War to the modern day. Students interacted with several exhibits, including one of the world’s best tank collections!
Egg Drop Contest in Physics
This past week the Physics students took part in a contest, constructing a device that would enclose and protect an egg from cracking or breaking when it is dropped from a height of about 15 feet towards a wooden target on the ground. The goal was to build a device with the least weight and the shortest dimensions, which would land as close to the target as possible. Student teams utilized a number of strategies to slow their acceleration and decrease the force of impact of their egg.
Mohawk Council Reading at CFB Elementary School
Members of the Mohawk Council, a group dedicated to learning about indigenous history and culture, recently visited CFB. Co-Presidents Riley Caulfield and Izzy Jewett read a Mohawk inspired children’s book, that they helped write and design, to the entire 3rd grade class.
The MIAA Women and Girls in Sports Day
The MIAA Women and Girls in Sports Day was held at Gillette Stadium this past Wednesday.
Congratulations to Olivia Fong, who was recognized for serving on the MIAA Advisory Committee this school year. Selected from 60+ applicants from around the state, she did an amazing job showcasing her leadership skills and representing Millis High School and all student-athletes throughout the MIAA membership. Olivia, Riley Caulfield, and Abby Powers represented Millis at the event on Wednesday, alongside Coach Zitoli and Coach FitzGerald.
Junior/Senior Prom 2024!
Last Friday the Junior/Senior prom was held at Grand View in Mendon. It was well attended and a fabulous time was had by all! Selected to this year's Prom Court were: Nick Scolponeti, Riley Sullivan, Lauren Malaquias, Addison Loer, and Kevin Sullivan. Heartfelt thanks go out to Rachel Hayden and Erin Sullivan for all the hard work that went into organizing prom this year!
Senior Projects
This week, the seniors presented their year-long capstone projects over at the Millis Public Library. Each student had a 15-minute slot and presented to a panel of judges, explaining the process and product of their project, while connecting this year-long endeavor to the Vision of a Millis High School Graduate. Congratulations to all our students on their contributions to our school and community through these projects. A special thank you goes to our English department for the countless hours they have put into grading, organizing and mentoring all our students along the way. Next week, we will begin to upload videos of the project presentations to the Millis Memories YouTube page for all to enjoy.

All MCAS exams this year are computer based.
The MCAS Math tests will begin promptly at 8am each day, and student classroom assignments will be posted throughout the building (they will also be emailed to the students). Biology (Grade 9) - June 4 & 5
Millis Mohawks Softball Team
The Varsity team's motto for this year is Leave A Mark. Part of doing that is to leave a mark on the future Mohawk softball players. After their victory over Holbrook, the Varsity players signed autographs on the team photos that the youth players had. Smiles all around. It is great to connect with the youth players and remind the Varsity that they once were those youth players. Mark left.
Varsity players signing autographs for younger players.
Athletic Signing Day
Seniors Hailey Bassett and Kyra Rice had their athletic signing day in the library earlier this week. Both will be taking their talents to the college level in basketball - Hailey at Roger Williams University and Kyra at Endicott College. After the ceremony, we also found out that senior, Caleb Kyei, will be moving on to play soccer next year at Anna Maria College. We are very proud of their accomplishments here at MHS and wish them all the best in their future athletic and academic endeavors.
Final Terpsichore Performance of the Year
Congratulations to all of the members of Terpsichore on their amazing performance last night. The grade 5 students were superstars in this years rendition of Romanian Folk Dances, and our Grade 6-12 performers brought their usual level of excellence to the show. Seniors Wilson Copice, Kristen Kelly and Troy Blanchette gave their final performances on the auditorium stage in some stellar senior solos. There wasn't a dry eye in the house when Wilson and Kristen reprised a piece they performed back in fifth grade, replete with video footage from way back when. After the show dancers and their guests moved into the cafeteria for the annual banquet.
Last Day of Classes for the Class of 2024
On their last day of school before senior projects, the Class of 2024 started the day off with an incredible breakfast buffet in the cafeteria, courtesy of our outstanding food services staff. Caricaturists were on hand to capture the fun, music was playing, the food was delicious, and a good time was had by everyone. The seniors received letters they wrote themselves back in fourth grade, posed for a class picture, and then took a trip down memory lane. They marched through the hallways of Clyde Brown and Millis Middle School, before taking one last stroll through the halls of Millis High School, greeted by students and teachers lining the halls along the way. It was a fantastic morning celebrating the Class of 2024 as they head off to prom tonight, prepare for senior projects next week, and get ready for graduation on June 6.

At the end of April in honor of Earth Day, members of Environmental Action taught the whole 3rd grade and a 1st grade class about climate change and pollution. Members created lesson plans with images and interactive activities, and then did a fun craft with the kids. Their goal was to spread environmental awareness past just the high school level, and everyone had fun!

National Honor Society Induction
On Tuesday evening, 25 students were inducted into the Millis High School Chapter of the National Honor Society. The evening was highlighted by speeches from the new inductees thanking an individual who has been a positive influence and role model in their lives. Congratulations to the new members of the National Honor Society! We look forward to the positive contributions they will continue to make in the Millis High School community in the future.
Roller Coasters in Physics Class
This week, the Honors and CP1 Physics classes have begun their work constructing paper and cardboard roller coasters! Using only recyclable materials such as used paper towel rolls and cardboard boxes, the objective is to make a marble run through a course that lasts at least 8 seconds. In addition, the base has to be at maximum one meter by one meter in length and width. Once their structure is finished, each group will determine the amount of potential and kinetic energy within their roller coasters at five different positions. With this information, students will find the power applied in their systems, connecting everything they have learned so far in one project. Stop by Mrs. Streck’s room if you would like to see the roller coasters in action!
Kaleb Joseph Presentation
As part of Mental Health Awareness month and our ongoing Millis Public Schools Speaker Series, we welcomed ex-professional basketball player and motivational mental health advocate, Kaleb Joseph and his "Self Help Tour" on Thursday. We were able to bring Kaleb to Millis thanks to a generous grant from the KyleCares Foundation. The morning presentation was a big hit with students, and you could hear a pin drop in the auditorium as everyone was completely engaged by Kaleb's electric and emotional presence. To see so many of our students willing to raise their hands to talk about their vulnerabilities in front of classmates was incredibly powerful, and our students demonstrated genuine empathy and compassion for those with the courage to speak up during the presentation. Kaleb spent the rest of the day connecting with students in our school, and returned to the stage in the evening to speak to our parent community. You can learn more about Kaleb through this video recently featured by Good Morning America, and through this video about his Self Help Tour. You can also check out this clip on Instagram from one of his recent parent conversations.

The Millis Mohawk Boosters is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that serves the Millis High/Middle school athletic community. They are made up of volunteers who work together and fundraise throughout the year. 100% of funds goes directly to serving our athletes, teams, the athletic department, or to improving the experience for participants and spectators. The Millis Mohawk Boosters was founded in the 1970s and has a proud tradition of coming together to provide a positive and rewarding experience for our athletes. We continue to evolve and always welcome new members, volunteers, and ideas.
The new website can be found here.
Millis High School is very grateful for everything the Boosters do for us. Thank you, Boosters!
ATTENDANCE POLICIES
.........................................................................
Tardies
If your student is going to be late to school, a parent/guardian must contact the office, by or before 8AM. The office can be reached one of the following ways:
Attendance line: 508-906-3713
Attendance email: hsattendance@millisschools.org
or you may send your student in with a note
If we don’t hear from a parent/guardian, the tardy will be unexcused. Upon arrival at school, the student should go directly to the office and sign in.
Dismissals
If your student needs to be dismissed, a parent/guardian must send their student in with a note or email the office at hsattendance@millisschools.org, listing the dismissal time and reason. Just a reminder that driving hours should not be scheduled during the school day, and do not constitute excused time away from school.
Phone calls for dismissals are not permitted.
Students are expected to check in with the office to confirm their dismissal and receive a pass. If we do not receive a note, a parent or guardian must come into the office to sign their student out at the time of dismissal. Please make every effort to adhere to this dismissal policy to minimize disruptions to class time. Please also be mindful of how a dismissal may impact your student’s eligibility to participate in extracurricular activities.
- Activities Eligibility Dismissal: If your student is involved in extracurricular activities and needs to be dismissed during the school day, they will need to provide a note from the place of their appointment (not a parental note) so they remain eligible to play or practice.
- Medical Dismissal: Any student requesting to leave for any kind of medical reason must go through the nurse’s office.
- Emergency Dismissal: In the event of a true emergency, a parent/guardian should contact the office. Every attempt will be made to expedite the dismissal. Please note, driving hours scheduled during the school day are not considered an emergency nor excusable under any circumstance. Every effort should be made to complete these hours outside of school hours.
Absence
If your student needs to be absent from school, a parent/guardian must notify the office via the attendance line at 508-906-3713 or by emailing hsattendance@millisschools.org as close to 8:00 AM as possible. If we don’t hear from a parent/guardian, the absence is unexcused and the student will be marked as truant. Attendance at school is incredibly important, and every effort possible should be made to maintain regular attendance at the high school.
