“Silent-Strength Kindness” Assembly
This morning students in grades 2nd-5th got to hear from Mr. Doug Reavis talk about superpower kindness. Doug’s brother Chris is severely disabled and is consistently kind to others. More of his story can be found here.
A few highlights from Doug’s talk that you can ask your child(ren) about:
Happiness is not what we have, but what we give.
If you lead people to be mean, they will follow you. If you lead people to be kind, they will follow you. It’s all in how you lead and who you follow.
There are three ways to use superpower kindness:
With our spoken words
With our written words
With our helping hands
Thanks for teaching and modeling kindness to your kids. They were incredibly kind to our guest speaker today in how they listened and heard what he had to say.

Feb. Week 3: Tectonic Plates
Observation: Last week we learned about the layers of soil.
Questions: Do the layers ever move? How do they move? What happens if they move?
Explanation: The Play Doh layers we used last week were called “the crust”. The crust is broken into chunks that move very slowly. Today we are going to see what happens when they move next to each other.
Materials:
Graham Crackers (4 graham crackers broken in half)
Cool Whip
Optional: Red Food Coloring
4 Paper Plates
Cup or bowl with water (large enough to dip the graham cracker in)
Investigation:
Mix several drops of food coloring into the Cool Whip.
Add a ¼ inch layer of Cool Whip to the bottom of each plate. The cool whip represents the mantle or the magma underneath the crust.
1st Plate: Transform Boundary - Put the halves of the graham cracker next to each other on the plate and slide the edges up and down. What does it sound/feel like?
2nd Plate: Divergent Boundary - Put the halves of the graham cracker next to each other on the plate. Gently push down as you slowly pull them apart.
3rd Plate: Convergent Boundary - Dip one side of each graham cracker in water. Put the soggy sides together when you place them next to each other on the plate. Slowly push the non-soggy parts of the graham cracker together so the soggy sides are pushed together.
Subduction Zone: As you push the two graham crackers together, push one down so it goes underneath the other graham cracker.
Reflection:
Which boundary would create a mountain range?
Which boundary would create a cliff?
Which boundary would be most likey to create an earthquake?
