Get Low
Low tech is a great way to go. I revised this section after meeting with a classroom team this morning. I took over a low tech core board which the SLP is going to laminate and put on a student's desk. The student does have some words, has some issues with intelligibility, and is not using a communication device. A low tech board is a great way for students to be exposed to the vocabulary, as well as a great support for students who may benefit from multiple means of input (auditory, visual, tactile).
Low tech can be a good substitute if a student is dysregulated. This lessens the task demands of communication as well as removes the sound from the situation.
- Using a laminated CORE board can allow you to go many places
- on a kickboard in the pool
- in the bathroom (laminated so it can be easily cleaned)
- in a setting where students are being quiet (whispering)
Where have you used low tech?
