The L-H Lion's Roar
January 7, 2025, vol. 12
Dear Lincoln-Hubbard Families,
Happy New Year! I hope you found the winter break to be restful and you were able to spend some quality time with friends and family. It is important to be able to disconnect from our daily routines and recharge as best as we can. I wanted to thank all the families who were so generous during the holiday season. I've never felt so warmly embraced by a new school community in the way that you have welcomed me. Those acts of kindness, holiday gifts and generosity have been so appreciated. As we embark on the second half of our school year, I wish you all health and happiness in 2025.
With Gratitude,
Feedback Wanted!!
Our school climate team wants to hear from YOU!! We would greatly appreciate a few minutes of your time to complete this short survey so that we may continue to best support our students and families.
Public Safety Announcement
- Please do not stop directly in front of the school anywhere on Woodland Ave (on the school side)
- For pickup and drop-off, please avoid double parking on Crescent Ave - pull all the way down to the LH staff member to assist in letting out your child curbside. It has improved. Now its becoming problematic again.
- In the AM, please, please, please PULL ALL THE WAY FORWARD to our LH staff member to release your child. It REALLY IS faster and safer. We have had a few "almost moments" where cars have nearly collided.
- Remind your students to use sidewalks and crosswalks at all times. As it gets colder, other areas not routinely meant for walking could become icy and would be less likely to be treated properly.
- Request to all parents/guardians picking up/dropping off on Lower Crescent - please do not permit your children or their siblings to walk on the retaining wall by the 1st grade entrance doors. The wall is high enough that should someone fall, they could get hurt. Lower Crescent doors will close promptly at 8:15 am. If the doors are closed, students will have to be dropped off by parent/guardian at our main entrance.
- Additional traffic information can be found here.
It would helpful if you could share this information with any caregivers who drop off or pick up your children as well.
Staff Parking Lot
Please refrain from using the staff parking lot for any AM or PM drop-offs or pickups. Staff are coming and going, especially our custodians and maintenance staff. Consequently, for safety reasons, students are only to exit through the staff manned doors, including the main entrance, Upper Crescent and Lower Crescent. Thank you.
Please share this information with any caregivers who drop off or pick up your children as well.
Student Attire in Winter
Please help us keep your child safe and warm this winter!
As the weather turns colder, please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for cold weather and outdoor play. To the best of our ability, until the weather is below freezing, students will be going outside for recess. Layers, hats, gloves, coats, and warm socks/shoes are essential. I know some students would choose to wear shorts all year, but we want to assure students can enjoy outdoor time safely. We appreciate your support.
Appropriate Footwear
This a friendly reminder that students should be wearing sneakers not only on days they have P.E., but also for recess if they want to play basketball, soccer, football or in the gaga pit. Sturdy shoes are a must for outdoor activities for safety reasons. Slip-ons, Crocs or shoes without a back are not appropriate for sports play at recess, especially in the cold winter months. When we are able to be outside, we WILL! Thank you for your help!
Notes from the Nurse
BABY IT’S COLD OUTSIDE!
Winter weather and freezing temperatures have arrived! It is important that students dress appropriately for the cold temperatures by wearing long pants, jackets, hats and gloves to school to ensure their health and safety while outside in the morning and at recess. In addition to appropriate outerwear, dressing in moisture wicking layers is also recommended.
Risks associated with underdressing in the cold are frostbite and hypothermia. Frostbite and hypothermia occurs more quickly in children as their smaller bodies lose heat more rapidly than adults. Younger children are also less likely to actually realize they are getting cold as they are not as in tune with their bodies and the symptoms of frostbite and hypothermia as adults.
Signs and symptoms of frostbite include skin that first appears red and then turns a waxy grayish-yellow, numbness, tingling and burning. Shivering, clumsiness, and slurred speech are signs and symptoms of hypothermia. Follow up with your child’s pediatrician should your child develop any of the above symptoms.
If you have any medical questions or concerns never hesitate to reach out to our school nurse, Mrs. Diakos. Her email is kdiakos@summit.k12.nj.us. You can also visit the Summit Public Schools Virtual Health Office for additional information.
