Cedar Grove Friday Flash
December 22, 2023
Dear Cedar Grove Families:
On this last day of school before winter break, students and staff enjoyed a visit from the Damascus Marching Band and participated in our school-wide sing along, led by our amazing music teacher, Mrs. Arellano.
In addition to these fun festivities, our staff was surprised with a Holiday Treat Buffet featuring an amazing assortment of goodies. Thank you to our PTA as well as to all the families who provided these special treats.
If you are the parent of a student currently in grades 4, 5, and 6, your child’s Individual Score Report for the Spring 2023 Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP) English Language Arts and/or Math assessments have been delivered to the Post Office. In addition to the school reports, you will receive a guide to assist you in understanding your student’s score on the assessments. Please allow at least one week for delivery from receipt of this message. If you have any questions about your student’s ELA and/or Math scores, please contact Mrs. German at 240-740-6190 or email Penny_F_German@mcpsmd.org.
Due to the upcoming holiday and winter break, our grade level newsletters will not be updated in this newsletter. The next Friday Flash will be sent January 5, 2024.
We look forward to seeing your children return to school on Wednesday, January 3rd, and we wish you all a wonderful holiday season and a happy and healthy New Year!

Chromebooks for Home Use
Cedar Grove is using a cart model for Chromebooks this year which means Chromebooks stay in the classroom and do not go home. For those of you who would like an MCPS home use device, please complete the Chromebook Form to Distribute to Families to request a home use Chromebook. The purpose is to give Cedar Grove students the access they need for instruction if they do not have a personal or home device. Staff at central office will monitor the requests through the form submissions, will prepare a device, assign it to your student, and will deliver it to Cedar Grove. We will distribute it to the student. As you can imagine, the process takes some time, which is why we are asking you to put in your request so that you have the device when your student needs it. The home use device is to be kept at home for the academic year. Requesting the device implies consent of use in accordance with MCPS policy (IGT-RA) and acknowledgement that the Chromebook, software, and issued peripherals are owned by MCPS.

From Mrs. Hirschhorn, Media Specialist
As our year draws to a close, we're reminding our young readers that we do have Winter Reading Challenges they can enjoy -- they can choose between the Snowflake Reading Challenge or the Winter Break Bingo. And before I forget, here's a sneak peek at our January Media Monthly to start off the new year! January is chock full of media-sponsored events and we're very excited to get the year started by exploring Book Breaks, a new subscription that offers virtual author visits! In addition, please save the date for our Readathon Read Aloud Night! This event is a Cedar Grove tradition that our families love and we're so happy to bring it back! I hope everyone has a restful winter break!
