A message from the Principal & Assistant Principal
Dear Cactus Valley Families,
“Together may we give our children the roots to grow and the wings to fly.” - author unknown
We know that the power of learning and growing truly happens when teachers and parents are working together, and we’ve been grateful for our parents who have joined us at school this spring to support our Culver’s Night, the Annual Art Auction, class field trips, as well as our grade level Music Performances. Even if you’ve not been able to attend some of these events, we appreciate the academic, social/emotional, and school celebration support you’ve shown your children and the teachers throughout the year as CVE is GROWing to Green!
Our students will once again be participating in our Caring Coin Competition. Our CVE tradition is one where students have the opportunity to give back to others. This year, we are keeping our focus locally by donating proceeds to the River Center as well as sponsoring a CRHS student through a scholarship. Please be on the lookout for additional information with details about this event that takes place at school from May 6th-23rd.
As we get closer to the end of the year, it’s also a time of inevitable change. We wish the best for our 5th graders as they move on to middle school, to students and families who may be moving to a new area, and to teachers who may be continuing their teaching adventures in new places.
The last day of school will be a half day on Thursday, May 30th, with students dismissed at 12:45. Please look for your child’s final report card to be sent electronically on Monday, June 3rd. We know there is usually much anticipation about your child’s next year's teacher, and that will be relayed to you in August when we have your child’s information updated in our PowerSchool portal.
Our Kinder-4th grade End of the Year Assemblies will take place on the afternoon of Wednesday, May 29th. Thursday, May 30th, will be our 5th Grade Celebration. Look for additional grade level information soon!
Starting July 15th, each student’s information must be updated in PowerSchool for the 2024-25 school year. The first day of the 2024-25 school year is Monday, August 12th.
Once again all grade level teams, except for 5th Grade, will be requesting a school supply fee in place of parents purchasing student supplies. The school supply fee will be $35. 4th Grade students will be given a supply list at the end of the year for their 5th Grade supplies, and the list will be posted online as well.
Learning Options this Summer:
Keep reading aloud: Reading aloud benefits all children, especially those who struggle. One benefit is that you can read books your child can't, so he/she will build listening comprehension skills with grade-level and above books. This will increase his/her knowledge and expand experience with text, so that he/she will do better when reading independently.
Take advantage of the summer reading programs at the local libraries. Look for additional information in this newsletter from the Silt Branch Library!
We are so grateful to the CVE community and for the opportunity to help lead and to be part of such an amazing school! We wish you all a safe, fun, & relaxing summer break!
Take Care,
Kelly Detlefsen, Principal
Stacy VanHercke, Assistant Principal

Counselor’s Corner
We finally made it to May! Our students will be preparing to move on to the next grade and our current 5th graders will prepare to transition to middle school. Character Education for May, at all grade levels, will be a review of skills and lessons we completed throughout the year.
Our Caring Cougars Coin Competition begins May 6 and goes until May 23. Look for a DOJO about this fundraiser which raises money for the River Center, a $500 scholarship for a former CVE student graduating from CRHS and a local non-profit, Literacy Outreach.
I wish each and every family a restful and fun summer!!
As we wind down the school year, The River Center will continue to deliver 6-7 non-perishable food items to students until the last week of May (May 29th will be the last delivery until next school year). Meal Monkey will be available during the summer. Look for information in the district newsletter. If you need any spring or summer clothes for your student, please reach out to One Door in Rifle or the River Center in New Castle. If your student needs mental health support, IMatter is a program that will provide 6 FREE counseling sessions for ANY Colorado youth. Visit the IMatter website (www.imattercolorado.org) to get your student connected with a therapist. For social/emotional or other types of assistance, please contact me, Amy Chabin, at 970-665-7764 or achabin@garfieldre2.net.
SEL with Ms. Sarah will teach K-5 Second Step lessons from Character Education as well 2 final MindUp lessons. They will also be reviewing mindfulness skills learned over the course of the year.

THANK YOU!!!! As we finish up the year, I want to thank all our CVE families for sharing your children with me this year. It’s been an amazing experience working with every single student and all the grade levels.
SCIENCE FAIR!!!! We will have our school-wide Science Fair on May 16th beginning at 4:30. All students and families are welcome to attend and watch our friends present their projects. They’ve been working very hard and I’m very excited to see the projects and watch the students give their presentations.
CONGRATULATIONS!!! I also want to congratulate our 5th graders who took the CMAS Science test for the first time ever! I just know that they all did well!
FUN IS HATCHING SCIENCE In the science room, we have lots of things hatching! I have praying mantis, ladybugs, and chicken eggs due to hatch soon. The chickens should hatch by the time this newsletter goes out. All the baby chicks will go to our friends at 4H to use for their program. We would like to thank Mrs. Jessica Terrell (former CVE parent) for providing us with the eggs from her coop each year. We always end up with great chickens and it’s such a fun experience for our kids to watch life spring from a simple egg!!!
Social Studies Update
As we wrap up the year I would like to take a moment to express my gratitude for sharing your children with us every single day. I am honored to have been able to teach every K-5 student this year and look forward to packing in as much fun and learning as possible over the next few weeks. Thank you for your continued support of us, your children, and their education!
