Tumuaki / Principal Message
Kia ora koutou katoa,
E haere ana tātou i roto i te panoni, he mea whakamīharo te kite i tō tātou hapori kura e tupu ake ana. Ko te panoni e kākahu mai ana i ngā huarahi mō te tipu, ā, e mau tonu ana ngā kaiako ki te whakarato i te mātauranga pātea, ngākau aroha, ahakoa ngā wero e puta mai ana.
This year is a year of great change; The Board of Trustees (BOT) has been working tirelessly to guide and support our school. Our management, alongside Pou Te Wharau (senior staff), is focused on maintaining consistency in behaviour management and fostering a calm, professional environment. They ensure that our staff are supported, confident, and able to maintain high expectations, while safeguarding the mana of our kura.
2025 is the year for stronger engagement from parents. Our attendance goal for this terms learning conferences is that more than 75% of all parents in each class attend. Your involvement is crucial to our tamariki’s success.
For those with tamariki in the Rūmaki, supporting their Te Reo learning at home is essential, Parents who speak Te Reo or who are learning Te Reo are needed to help the Rūmaki tamariki succeed.
Parents of our Auraki tamariki can also support Te Reo Māori by helping your tamaiti to practice pepehā, karakia, waiata, and instructions strengthens their connection to Te Reo.
Together, we can ensure they thrive in their academic and cultural learning.
Our kura’s unique focus on Te Reo Māori and Ngāti Awa history sets us apart.
This year we are reflecting on Tino Rangatiratanga.
What does Tino Rangatiratanga mean to you? How do you show Tino Rangatiratanga in your everyday life? We encourage you to consider these questions as part of your journey in supporting your tamariki’s learning.
Nāku noa, nā, Erin Te Pou
Rebuild project
This week the demolition started! The 2 classes and playground is cleared! Though we are sad to see the spaces go, its marks the start of breaking ground for the 6 classrooms coming!
Tamariki have been very curious about what is happening.
Thank you to all whānau for using the right path to the back classrooms as well!
We have diggers and men on site to demolish the playground space and C Block, making way for our new classrooms.
Due to the construction space, a new fenced pathway has been made from D/E block to the back classrooms (Whāea Cilla, Whāea Te Amiona, Matua Vijay, Whāea Edna and Whāea Takirimu akomanga). Access on the path near the pool is now restricted.
We have a range of construction vehicles parked on the road and using the driveway. The team is working hard to reduce traffic issues and we appreciate whānau using the bus bay to drop off and pick up tamariki, as the safe option during this very busy time.
Please talk with your classroom teacher if you have any questions or concerns.
Thank you all for the continued patience!
Te Hotoke - The winter season
As we move into Takurua, the Māori season of winter, it's a time of reflection, rest, and renewal. Traditionally, Te Hotoke marks the period when the environment becomes quieter. The ngahere (forest) slows down, many trees stop growing, and food becomes scarcer. It’s a time when people would gather indoors to share stories, pass down knowledge, and prepare for the year ahead.
In many Māori iwi traditions, Te Hotoke is also linked with the rising of Matariki (the Pleiades star cluster), which signals the Māori New Year. Though Matariki typically appears in late Hotoke or early spring (depending on the iwi), the season itself is about pausing, reconnecting with whānau, and setting intentions for the future.
● Ensure that you have the correct winter school uniform.
● Learn and practice health and safety plans around heating at home.
● Keep well rested and hydrated to beat the winter bugs.
● Finally good luck to all of the whanau that participate in winter sports codes like rugby and netball.

Student-Led Conference
Kia ora e te whānau,
You are warmly invited to attend your child’s Student-Led Conference on:
Thursday 12th June
Anytime between 3.00pm – 5.30pm
At Te Kura o Te Paroa
These conferences are a special opportunity for your tamaiti to take the lead in sharing their learning journey, goals Ara Wawata, and achievements with you. They will guide the meeting themselves — this is their time to shine and to show you what they’ve been working towards.
Your presence shows your support for their progress and helps reinforce the importance of learning in their lives. Even a few minutes of your time will make a big impact on your child’s confidence and motivation.
We look forward to seeing you there and celebrating the progress of all our tamariki.
*Last Term we had Parent interviews. Some whānau said they were attending and didn’t turn up. Whānau if your circumstances change can you please ring through to the school office and let them know so that the teacher that is notified of the changes and a new date and time can be organised.
Ministry of Educaton Announcements
$100 million investment in targeted maths support for children who need it most. This investment will focus on three key areas:
● A Maths Check in Years 2
We will introduce a check-in during the first two years of school to identify students who need extra support in mathematics early on. This is similar to the phonics check. This consistent nationwide data will inform decision-making for future budgets about the levels of investment needed.
● Tier 2 Maths Interventions
For students who are identified as needing extra support, we will fund the equivalent of 143 new full-time maths intervention teachers to provide targeted support to children in years 0-6 who are not achieving at the curriculum level. This is similar in design to the successful Tier 2 Structured Literacy interventions that follow the Phonics Check.
● Nationwide Rollout of the Intermediate Maths Intervention
Following the promising results of a pilot involving 3,000 intermediate-aged students, who received intensive maths support four times a week from teachers and a dedicated online tool, we will scale this programme nationwide. From 2026, it will reach around 34,000 students to boost their maths achievement and ensure they are ready for high school and NCEA.

What an amazing day we had yesterday!
Firstly, a huge mihi and congratulations to all our tamariki for their kaha, resilience, and enthusiastic participation. With 98% of our tamariki taking part and smiling — that’s something to be proud of!
A special shout out to our whānau — you turned up in force! The astroturf, the field, and the track were flushed with your presence, and it made such a difference. You brought the wairua that made the day feel so special. Thank you for making it happen!
Big thank you to our incredible staff:
To those who helped in the early hours, those who kept each station running smoothly, worked through breaks, moved vehicles, set up equipment, and did all the behind-the-scenes mahi — we see you, and we truly appreciate you. We couldn’t have done it without you.
To Whaea Charlice, Matua Hemi, and Kaedyn — we are so lucky to have you in our kura. Your energy and commitment were next level!
To the Lawrence whānau & Ritiman Whānau Trust, thank you for your generosity — mowing the track and allowing us to use your paddocks was a huge help. Ngā mihi mahana.
And finally, to everyone who supported and encouraged the day along — thank you. The success of this event is a reflection of our strong, connected school community.
