Principals' Message
Dear Harwood Families,
How we implement this and what it looks like will continue to be explored and will be informed by the work ahead with students, staff and families/guardians.
To that end, please join us on May 29th @ 6pm, as Harwood’s Student Harkness leaders facilitate dialogue for both staff and community members to collectively begin considering the research and discuss:
How will a break in our use of Cell Phones increase engagement, connection and learning at Harwood?
There will also be a whole school dialogue with staff and students in June to process and discuss.
There is much more to learn and understand from each other in order to continue collectively creating a learning environment where ALL students, staff, and families feel a sense of belonging, pride and purpose and that strengthens and sustains a rigorous and robust academic program that provides exploration and prepares students with knowledge, understanding, and skills for their next steps.
This is going to be hard.
And, we are excited by the positive opportunities ahead in 2024-2025!
We look forward to doing this work in partnership.
Laurie, Meg and Bethany

Student Support Services
The Vermont legislature mandates that public schools conduct fire drills (school evacuations) and options-based drills (response to intruders) on a regular basis throughout the school year. Harwood Union Middle and High School will conduct a Secure the Building drill this month (May 29th) in an age-appropriate manner. It is important for students and staff to be familiar with the process, procedures and routines. With each drill, we learn ways to refine and improve our safety plans.
We will talk with your child about the various exercises, the reasons why we conduct them and the best ways to remain safe. Please help us in conveying to your child the importance of these drills so we are prepared in the event of a real emergency.
The safety and security of our students and staff is of the utmost importance. We will continue to partner with law enforcement and other emergency responders as we continually revisit our procedures and routines to refine our safety plans.
Thank you for taking the time to talk with your child about this issue. If you have any specific questions, please feel free to contact your child’s principal.
Health Office Updates
Measles is a highly contagious respiratory virus that can be dangerous, especially for babies and young children. Measles cases are rising in the U.S., Canada, and other countries. In the U.S., nearly twice as many measles cases have been reported in the first few months of 2024 compared to all of 2023. Within the last two weeks, the Vermont Department of Health reported the first diagnosed case of measles in the state since 2018. Measles is common in some countries so make sure you’re protected against measles before traveling internationally. Check with your provider or your school nurse if you are unsure your student is fully vaccinated.

Harwood Prom 2024
Harwood Prom was a great success! 230 Harwood juniors, seniors and guests had a fun night of dancing and spending time with their friends and classmates. We are thankful to Sugarbush for hosting this year. Their staff was incredibly supportive throughout the planning process and during the event.
The Junior Class Council worked tirelessly throughout the year to make the evening a success. We are also appreciative of administrators and staff who chaperoned the event.

Harwood Rotary Interact
Harwood Rotary Interact members took part in Green Up in the areas around Harwood on Friday, May 10th. The group worked hard to make an area in their community just a little more beautiful!
The group has now moved on to a Spirit Week activity to raise funds for Habitat for Humanity. This is accomplished with our annual Penny War! Not familiar with a penny war? Here’s how it works; Each TA has a container to collect pennies, which are each worth 1 positive point. Other grades can sabotage penny containers with coins and bills which are equal to the value of the denomination (for example; a nickel is -5). The grade with the most positive points wins first place and we hope to raise lots of money for this important organization.Spring Art Show
Harwood will also be hosting our annual Spring 7-12 Art show
June 4th
6-8 p.m.
Liam Kenneth Hale Adventure Scholarship
Liam Hale was a passionate skier, mountain biker and golfer. His exposure to a wide
variety of outdoor sports at Sugarbush Resort made him a confident, adventurous, and
outgoing young man. His work experience at the mountain taught him responsibility and
was a source of great pride. The Hale family established an adventure scholarship in
collaboration with Sugarbush Resort in memory of their son Liam. This year the Liam
Kenneth Hale Adventure Scholarship has been awarded to Milo Lavit, a sophomore at
Harwood Union High School.
Milo, an important member of Harwood’s golf, ice hockey and lacrosse teams was
incredibly honored to receive this award. “I am thankful for the opportunity that I have
been given to continue my passions while also being able to try new things and find new
hobbies“ Throughout Milo’s application he discussed the importance of a healthy
lifestyle and adventure to who he is as an individual. “I feel so much happier and
healthier when I get outside, try new foods and participate in different activities. I realize
that If I never try new things I won't be able to grow.”
The Liam Kenneth Hale Adventure Scholarship provides a Harwood High School
student with the opportunity to learn the skills, virtues, and passion Liam gained during
the many joyous days he spent at Sugarbush. This scholarship is awarded annually on
May 9th, Liam’s birthday, to a student completing grade ten.
Those wishing to contribute to this scholarship in memory of Liam can send donations
to The Liam Kenneth Hale Adventure Scholarship at HUUSD 340 Mad River Park
Waitsfield, VT 05672.
UVM Prize Math Exam
The UVM Prize Examination in Mathematics is a competition that has been held by the University of Vermont for Vermont high school students for the past 66 years. The two-hour exam is extremely challenging and not intended to be finished in the time provided. It often has problems from concepts that we don’t traditionally have time to cover in high school math classes. Students must challenge themselves to apply what they know and extend beyond what they have learned.
This year, we are proud to announce that Tristan Gotshall has achieved the best score at Harwood. Congratulations Tristan!
Sample question from the exam, for fun: Tokens come in four shapes: circles, triangles, squares, and stars. Tokens of the same shape weigh the same. One circle weighs as much as one triangle and one star combined; one square weighs as much as one circle and one triangle combined; and three squares weigh as much as four stars. How many triangles are needed to match the weight of two circles?
Scholarships!
‼️Calling all Harwood seniors ‼️
The Harwood Boosters Club will be awarding three $500 scholarships to graduating seniors to support pursuit of their further education. Find the application on Naviance.com - deadline extended to Friday May 24th

Greetings!
My name is Jasmine Rose, and I am the Troupe Manager for Circus Smirkus' 2024 Tour! My main focus right now is to set up homestays for our troupers during our tour travels this July and August. I am looking to get the word out to local communities and families near Waterbury, VT about our need for homestays July 1-5th (4 nights).
Homestay families host a minimum of 2 troupers for their stay at a tour site. Homestays provide our troupers a comfortable bed to sleep in, they are responsible for transporting them to and from the show site, feeding them a nourishing breakfast and dinner, and supervising them when they are away from Circus Smirkus staff. Families should keep in mind that they will not only be transporting the troupers, but their luggage as well. Each trouper will have at least one large bag/suitcase that they will be bringing with them.
Homestay providers receive 2 tickets per show day to use for any show at that site. For example, if there are 2 show days, the homestay host would receive 4 tickets total. We will follow up to find out when families intend to use the tickets.
If you know of families who are interested in hosting troupers for a leg (or more!) of our tour, please have them fill out the application as soon as they can: https://forms.gle/r8LrcHEyE17XJWHD6
All household members aged 18 or more must pass a background check. If you will have a friend outside of the household help you, they too must be identified and background checked.
I have attached the Homestay Handbook below for your reference.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out!
Thank you!
Jasmine Rose
