Welcome Back to School

1 MN August 16, 2024
Dear Scottie Families,
It is my pleasure to welcome you back for our 2024_2025 school year. Mr. John and Mr. Hoang have been cleaning our beautiful building and preparing for your arrival. Ms. Amy, Ms. Roosma, and I are managing supply and consumable workbook deliveries to classrooms in anticipation of our full staff return on August 27 and we are looking forward to a strong start on September 4 for grades 1-5 and September 9 for our Scottie Pups in Kindergarten.
A Scottie Shout-Out to the generous PTA donation that funded our playground refresh in July. We are grateful for the Kachel, Dahl, and Poffenbarger Families for their generous time and effort repainting our foursquare, world map, and classroom numbers. Additionally, there are cute Scottie paws to show us where to stand by the front door when we ring the bell for identification and entry into the building.
Our McDonald PTA held a planning retreat this past week and are eagerly preparing for community events, intern arrivals and connection opportunities.
I am grateful to begin my seventh year serving our Scottie Community, shoulder to shoulder with each of you as we live our vision to engage all learners, in partnership with family and community to become informed, compassionate, global citizens.
Sincerely,
Zoe Facilla, she/her

Welcome Assistant Principal Rachel Roosma
My name is Rachel Roosma and I am so excited to be at McDonald International as the Assistant Principal half time! I was here 8 years ago as an AP half time, it feels so good to be back in a place that feels so familiar! Students call me Ms. Roosma, and I have no problem with you calling me Rachel. I share an office with Zoe and we have an open door policy so feel free to stop by any time to connect with me and get to know me better. I am entering into my 21st year in education. My first 11 years were in Philadelphia, and I was in the classroom for 8 years prior to moving into a teacher coaching position and then administration. I have been in Seattle as an Assistant Principal for 10 years now with Olympic View being the place I have spent all 10 years! When not at McDonald and Olympic View Elementary, I spend time with my cocker spaniel, Hazel. This summer I have started hobby hunting and am learning the art of baking things that are usually bought only at a bakery.
Welcome Abby Bernhard, Multilingual Instructional Assistant and Student Teacher
¡Hola! My name is Abby Bernhard and I am excited to be joining the McDonald International community as a Spanish Instructional Assistant this year. Students can call me Profe Abby. This will be my seventh year in education. For the first five years I had numerous teaching positions in New Orleans, Louisiana. Last year I had the opportunity to teach and study at IslandWood’s school in the forest where I met some wonderful McDonald students and teachers. While working at McDonald I will concurrently be earning my Master’s in Teaching at the University of Washington with an emphasis in bilingual education. In my freetime I enjoy spending time outside and dancing. I am looking forward to meeting and learning with you all.
