St Luke's Catholic Primary
NEWSLETTER | 8TH MAY 2025
Message From The Principal
Welcome to Term 2
I hope you all had a fantastic break and are ready for another exciting term ahead.
We began our term with a beautiful Mass celebrating the life and work of Pope Francis. His legacy of kindness, humility and dedication to social justice has touched many lives. In his honour, we are reaffirming our commitment to his encyclical, Laudato Si', and our responsibility to care for our common home. This year, our sustainability team is taking the lead to promote environmental stewardship and we are excited to see the positive impact we can make together. In Fr Stan’s homily, he reminded our students of the many ways they can assist and contribute to caring for our Earth.
The students are to be commended for the wonderful way they conducted themselves during this Mass. Despite a few technical hiccups, they remained incredibly quiet and waited patiently while we tried to get things up and running. Our students truly embody the St Luke’s Values in all they do, and we are blessed to witness this each and every day! Well done, everyone, you should be very proud of yourselves!
Mother's Day
As Mother's Day approaches, we invite our school community to pause and celebrate the extraordinary women who shape our lives with love, strength and care. Tomorrow morning, we warmly welcome all our wonderful mother figures to join us for our much-loved Mother’s Day Breakfast, starting at 7:30 am. Following breakfast, families are invited to visit our open classrooms and enjoy a heartwarming performance by our Pre-Primary students, who have been rehearsing with great excitement!
It is also appropriate for us to take a quiet moment to remember and honour the mothers who are no longer with us, acknowledging their lasting impact on our lives. “A mother’s love is always with us. Her guiding hand may no longer be seen, but her warmth lives on in everything we do.”
Sleep, Focus and Wellbeing
As I walk around and visit classrooms, I have been in conversation with many staff about how tired some of our students have been looking lately. It’s affecting their focus, memory and overall mood. Dr. Billy Garvey’s book, Ten Things I Wish You Knew About Your Child’s Mental Health, offers some great insights: Many kids who seem restless or struggle with concentration might just be lacking sleep. Think about how you feel after a long-haul flight with little rest – focusing is tough, remembering things is frustrating and even small setbacks can make you irritable. That’s how some of our students feel when they come to school without enough sleep. A good night’s rest is crucial for their learning, emotions and wellbeing. We’d love your support in helping them build strong sleep routines so they can feel their best in the classroom each day. If you’re interested in learning more, Dr. Garvey’s book is a worthwhile read and is available at most stores, including Kmart, Big W and Amazon.
Thank you all for your continued support and dedication. It’s through our collective efforts that we create a nurturing and inspiring environment for our students to thrive.
Let’s make Term 2 a fantastic one!
Warm regards,
Sarah Williams

Message from the Assistant Principals
Mother's Day
Tomorrow morning, we have our Mother’s Day Breakfast to celebrate all our wonderful St Luke's Mums, Grandmothers and special ladies in our lives. A huge thank you to Blaise Rego and the Fathering Project team for all your time and efforts behind the scenes to thoughtfully plan and organise this event. We have had an outstanding amount of RSVPs with 330 responses (that's a whole lot of bacon and eggs for our Dad's to cook!) It's shaping up to be a truly vibrant and memorable morning.
Please be mindful of the residents around the school and not parking over driveways/verges. Parking on school grounds is extremely limited, so it would be a great idea to carpool where possible. We hope the mothers, grandmothers and female figures all have a lovely time at breakfast, visiting classrooms and watching our Pre-Primary assembly.
We wish all our mums a very happy Mother’s Day on Sunday.
Project Compassion
We extend our sincere appreciation to all families for your generosity in supporting Project Compassion during the Season of Lent. We have raised $1964.45 to help those in need. Your kindness and commitment will make a meaningful difference to help vulnerable people tread out of their path of poverty all over the world.
Your compassion and willingness to give, embody the true spirit of Lent, and we deeply value your efforts. Thank you for being part of this wonderful mission of hope and change.
School Uniform
It's delightful to see the children looking so neat and tidy in their uniforms this term. If children prefer to wear shorts instead of long trousers, that's perfectly acceptable. Many children do not seem to feel the cold and therefore opt for the shorter option.
Laudato Si’ Week 16th- 24th May
Laudato Si' is an encyclical letter written by Pope Francis, published in 2015, addressing environmental issues and the need for sustainable development. It emphasises the interconnectedness of all creation, urging humanity to care for the Earth and combat climate change and pollution.
At St Luke’s Catholic Primary, we put Pope Francis’ Laudato Si’ into action each day. Children are encouraged to reduce, reuse and recycle resources at school. We also care for our grounds and gardens in a variety of ways. The children and staff of St Luke’s CP also care for God’s creation by walking Lulu and providing a safe home for our chickens. Thank you to the Year Six Sustainability Ministry and staff who have led us in caring for our school environment.
Catholic Education Western Australia (CEWA) have designated a week to celebrate Laudato Si’, 16th-24th May. During this time, we will share with you some of the initiatives implemented at St Luke’s CP that help us to follow the words of Pope Francis and care for our common home. It is also a great time to think about what you can do at home to care for the world God created for us. Keep an eye out on social media for our school highlights during the week.
“Let us sing as we go. May our struggles and our concern
for this planet never take away the joy of our hope.”
Laudato Si’ 244
Year 6 Confirmation
Please keep the Year Six children in your prayers over the coming weeks as they prepare for their Confirmation on the weekend of June 7th and 8th. This coincides with Pentecost, when we celebrate the Holy Spirit descending upon the Apostles, marking the start of the Church's mission.
In preparation for receiving the Sacrament, the Year Six children, along with those from the parish PREP program, will attend a Parent/Child Workshop on May 13th and a Retreat Day on May 27th. Bishop Donald Sproxton will visit the children on May 28th as part of their preparations.
Special thanks to Angela Coon, our parish Sacramental Coordinator, for her hard work in organising this important event.
LifeLink Free Dress Day
Alongside the exciting events happening this term, our school will be supporting LifeLink. This is a wonderful initiative that helps those in need within our community and instils a sense of responsibility for caring for those less fortunate. To encourage a practical demonstration of Faith and make a meaningful contribution, we will be having a free dress day with the theme 'Colours of Hope' on Wednesday 4 June.
Students are encouraged to dress in colours or themes that represent hope. To support LifeLink’s important work, students are asked to bring a gold coin or note to donate on the day.
O'Connor Day
We will celebrate Sister Mary O’Connor on Friday, May 23rd. The O’Connor faction (Blue faction) was named in her honour, as she was the first principal of St Luke’s Catholic Primary. A member of the Mercy Order, Sister Mary's dedication to education and helping others continues to inspire us all at St Luke’s. On this day, children in the O’Connor faction will receive an icy pole at lunch.

New Books: The Library is overflowing with new books this term. We have new series by our favourite authors Anh Do & David Walliams, new books on our favourite subjects like Minecraft, Animals, Dinosaurs & Pets and wonderful novels for our older readers like “Runt”, “Geek Girl” & “The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas". I am also proud to announce the arrival of my 3rd book “Lulu, the A-Z of Me”. The children love trying to spot themselves and their friends!
National Simultaneous Storytime: We are once again participating in this nationwide event in Week 4. This year millions of students all around Australia will be reading “The Truck Cat” by Deborah Frenkel together. The Truck Cat is a story about cats and humans, immigration and identity, and homes lost and found. Our buddy classes will join together to read and do activities. I can’t wait to share this special day with my friends. Photos soon!!!
