Thanks for Teaching
Let's just take a moment to think about this. If you are like me, the student's comment may have surprised you. It seems very unusual for a young student to say that to a teacher. So, who taught the child to be so respectful and considerate? Was it the teacher? Was it their parent? Maybe another student? I have no idea and it doesn't really matter who did the teaching. What matters is that the student learned how to communicate in this respectful way.
The phrase, "Thanks for teaching", also makes me think of parents. When we have students who are respectful, hard working, caring, etc. it would be appropriate to say to parents, "Thanks for teaching". Thanks for teaching your kids to care, to try their best, to ask for help, to be kind, to be resilient, etc. Parents are a child's first and most important teacher in their life. So, we appreciate anything you do to support your child and train them in ways that help them engage with life and do their very best to reach their best potential.
I also want to echo the student's words when I think of our staff. Whether you are a classroom teacher, an EA, Secretary, Librarian, Custodian, Bus Driver or anything else, you also impact student learning. Thanks for teaching. Thanks for demonstrating that adults can be patient and caring, good leaders and role models, safe, dependable and hard working.
So, to everyone in "The Village", who helps the children to learn, grow and be their best, "Thanks for teaching". Our kids are better for it and they are absolutely worth the effort.
Have a wonderful Spring!

Kindergarten Meet and Greet
So, what can you expect when you come for this event? The event will take place in our Library and students will participate in a few simple activities and the parents will also have a chance to talk with Learning Support staff and visit the office if they have any questions or documents to submit.
We have planned 45 minute appointments for 5 students at a time. Please email the office (so@hsd.ca) by May 5th if you have registered for kindergarten but haven't received the appointment email. We look forward to meeting your awesome kids and for them to meet our wonderful teachers.
If you know of a child who hasn't yet registered but would be of kindergarten age for the next school year, please register as soon as possible at hsd.ca so they can participate in this important event.
Gr. 3 and 4 Spring Concert
On May 23 at 6:30 pm, we will host our grade 3 and 4 spring concert. This year, we have some fresh ideas! We are planning a "variety concert", with some musical pieces and some individual student presentations. We are also planning to hold the concert outdoors, on school grounds! Take note, students will also share a special choral piece to say "thank-you" to all of our volunteers this year. So, please bring your lawn chairs to our playground and enjoy a fun outdoor concert at South Oaks. If the weather does not co-operate, we will adjust the date as needed. All family and friends are welcome to attend.
Bike Rodeo (for gr. 1-4 students)
Of course, your child will need a bicycle and helmet to fully participate in this event. MPI will provide a few spare bikes/helmets for those who don't have one. Helmet sharing will not be allowed due to a few cases of lice in the school this month, sorry. Either send your child to school with their bike/helmet or simply drop the bike off near our bike racks, either on the east or west side of the school. Make sure to tell your child where their bicycle will be. You are encouraged to lock your bike if possible.
We look forward to these fun 2 days of active learning! In the event of inclement weather, the event will be postponed or cancelled depending on MPI's schedule.
