Principal Engdall
Greetings Shaw Montessori,
Our Shaw Stars boy’s basketball team finished their season on Thursday, narrowly missing a win to earn a place in the championship game. Our girls basketball team won their final playoff game this past Friday and move ahead to the championship game on 2/20, Go Stars!
Our student athletes played hard with big hearts. Thank you to Coach Stravitz, Coach Wilfert, and Coach Kutsko for their work with our teams. Next up flag football!
I do hope that you and your sweethearts attended one of the dances on Friday night, we had a blast! Big thank you goes out to Griselda Yee for her work on the Sweetheart Dance and to Hazel, Declan, Amerie, and Mila for their work on the Hollywood Dance!
On Wednesday we will have our Site Council/PTA. During Site Council, Chairwoman Adrienne Speas will share a presentation on the proposed school closures. This presentation does a good job of explaining the why’s behind this proposal. Please remember that the governing board is holding 2 more public meetings where comments for and against the closures may be shared by the public. Additional information can be found on our district website at: www.phxschools.org Both our PTA and Site Council meetings will be held in the cafeteria. Childcare during the PTA meeting and pizza will be provided. Please note that there is not babysitting during the Site Council meeting.
A couple of reminders…our parking lot is small and crowed. We all know this. Please be guided by basic driving courtesies when entering, dropping off and exiting. We have seen some VERY dangerous behaviors displayed by parents/guardians that are in a hurry—adult issue, set your alarm and leave home earlier to avoid speeding in our drop off zone. And remember, this is a drop off zone, not for parking or standing more than a moment.
There are big trucks entering and exiting our gates. Use extreme caution, hold on to the little ones! The front of the school is not an area where children may run, chase or be loose and unsupervised. Construction should be complete by the end of March.
Remember that Monday 2/17 school is closed. School resumes on Tuesday with Wednesday being a full day.
Wishing you the best,
Principal Engdall

Tips for Dealing with Grief
Grief is something that we all must deal with at some time. Whether it is the loss of a loved one, a pet or a friend it is a difficult subject to navigate with our children. Below are some things to look for and ways to handle discussing grief with your child.
What Parents Can Do
• Be a a good listener
- talk during non-crisis moments
- provide love and guidance
• Be reassuring
- Allow them to talk about their fears, be reassuring & help them feel safe
• Be honest
- Answer questions honestly, paying attention to the age and stage of development
• Be patient
- All children to feel their feels and to cry as needed
- It’s normal to go in and out of grief
• Be aware
- If grief becomes overwhelming and prolonged reach out to Ms. Laura for support
• Be open
- Rely on your support network
If you have any questions, please reach out to Laura.Hildwein@phxschools.org.

Elementary Garden
Greetings!
We expanded our pickling repertoire this week. We tried strawberries, cabbage, onions and tomatoes. Grapes remain the favorite. Pickling goes back to the age of the Egyptians and the Fertile Crescent. Most of our upper elementary students are familiar with this part of the world and some of the early civilizations that resided here. This is where written language, agriculture and pickling started! Thanks, early humans!
One more week until our parent workday! We have 47 people registered. We will be excavating the primary and elementary pods and spreading playground mulch. We did this a couple years ago during a parent workday and it is time once again. See you next Saturday from 8-12.

CALLING ALL MASON JAR W/ LIDS DONATIONS! If you have some that you are willing to donate, then we will happily accept them. You can leave them on the table outside the office.
We are always seeking coffee grounds, seeds, and aluminum cans. If you have anything that might benefit our garden program, please contact me via email. The front table outside of the office is our designated drop-off location for garden essentials. james.obrien-moench@phxschools.org
Enjoy your weekend!

PESD Public Hearings
Make Your Voice Heard – Support Our Schools!
Phoenix Elementary School District #1 is making tough decisions to protect students, staff, and the district’s future. One of their proposals is to close two schools at the end of this school year. The Board’s plan ensures long-term financial stability, retains all current staff, and strengthens educational opportunities for every child.
We need your support at public hearings to ensure these difficult decisions to protect our district's financial sustainability are supported. A strong opposition could overshadow the thoughtful planning behind these decisions – we can’t let that happen.
How You Can Help:
📢 Attend a public hearing and share your support.
📝 Sign up to speak – even a few words make a difference.
👥 Get involved – earn volunteer hours and help organize.
Our goal is to have four parents in person at each of the upcoming meetings.
Please sign up here so we can stay organized. https://signup.com/go/VEkbaxe
These decisions shape the future of our schools. Let’s stand together to ensure the best for our students!
