CREW Friday Five
January 10, 2025
5 Updates for this week!
Resending the Friday Five
I am resending the Friday Five because I am getting some feedback that it did not make it to all parents!
Thank you!
1. Happy New Year, CREW!!
Dear Sam Hughes CREW,
Happy New Year! We hope you all enjoyed a joyful and restful holiday season, and we’re excited to welcome everyone back for the spring semester.
As we move into the new year, we continue to embrace our school’s values of being CREW– Caring and kind, Respectful and responsible, Excelling everyday, and Working together. These values guide us in fostering a supportive and inclusive community where all students, staff, and families can thrive. We encourage you to continue reinforcing these ideals at home as we work together to create a positive learning environment for all.
Looking ahead, we are excited for the opportunities the spring semester holds. Our students have made incredible progress so far, and we can’t wait to see what they will achieve as we continue to work together. There are many exciting activities and events planned, and we look forward to sharing them with you in the coming weeks.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership. Let’s make this semester even more successful by staying connected and united as CREW.
Wishing you and your family a wonderful and productive new year!
Warmly,
Ms. Bolasky
Principal, Sam Hughes Elementary
2. Character Strong Trait for January is Perseverance
This month is all about Perseverance. One way to think about Perseverance is “pushing yourself through challenges and obstacles.” We all experience challenges in our lives. We all have moments when we feel like we can’t do it or that we want to give up on a big task. It is important to develop tools that help us work through those challenges in order to grow in those moments instead of giving up. How might you practice Perseverance as a family this month?
Perseverance is 1 of 3 traits we will focus on throughout the year that helps students Be Strong. Throughout the school, students will be developing skills like focusing, organizing, and goal-setting.
3. Parent/Family Morning Drop Off and Afternoon Dismissal Reminders
We want to remind our CREW that safety is our number one priority, especially during morning drop off and at afternoon dismissal.
- All students are to play on the main playground in the morning- students should not be in the building. Supervision starts at 7:45AM. The playground gates will open at 7:45AM- students should not be dropped off prior to 7:45AM.
- Regular dismissal occurs on the playground for grades 1-5. Kindergarten dismisses from their classrooms.
- Dismissal on Wednesday is at 1:45pm.
- Please utilize crosswalks to cross the streets around school. We are having adults and students that are crossing in between cars and even between the buses- this is extremely dangerous!
- Please help us model safe practices for our students.

🪴 Your Tax Credit Helps Our Huskies Grow! 🪴
Join us in making a difference for our students at Sam Hughes Elementary! Your Arizona tax credit helps fund amazing programs like fine arts education, chess lessons, and our beloved Ecology and Garden programs.
What is a tax credit? It’s a dollar-for-dollar credit on your Arizona state taxes—at no extra cost to you! Contribute up to $200 (single) or $400 (married), and if you owe more in state taxes than you give, you’ll get every dollar back as a refund or reduction on your tax bill.
Here’s what your tax credit supports:
- Learn healthy eating by planting, harvesting, and sampling fresh veggies from our ‘garden to mouth’ program.
- Study nature by making observations and collecting data on insects, birds, lizards, plants and tortoises in our habitat areas.
- Plan and carry out investigations in seed spacing, composting, watersheds (models), pollination and more!
- Enjoy Sam Hughes traditions, like snacking on grapefruit straight from the tree and blending green smoothies!
How you can help:
- Donate and Make Your Impact: Visit our tax credit portal to learn more and donate online.
- Spread the Word! Share this opportunity with friends and family—anyone who pays Arizona state taxes can help!
