Fragrance Products at School
Hello Blue Heron Middle School families,
Students at Blue Heron Middle School are more frequently wearing significant amounts of fragrances, such as cologne or perfume. Recently, this has begun to affect students and staff across our campus in a negative manner due to the strength of the fragrance application.
Allergies and sensitivities to scents can have health implications, which can range from mild to severe and can even result in hospitalization. A scent is a smell or odor from products and it can be natural such as flowers or synthetic such as perfume. Fragrances or scents are found in a wide range of products including perfume or cologne, aftershave, deodorant, soap, air fresheners, detergents, flowers and candles.
What can you do to help? Discuss this with your child(ren) especially about how they can be considerate of those who are sensitive to fragrances or scents. Ensure your child keeps their packaged fragrances at home as these items are not to be brought to school. Help your child understand the importance of avoiding the use of these products in school or on the bus. If fragrances or scented products must be used, do so sparingly and only at home. A general guideline for fragrances and scented products is that they should not be detectable more than an arm's length away from you.
Please understand that this issue is not about you or your child as a person or about your choice of fragrance or scent; it is about the adverse reaction that may be caused by the use of the product. Any students who bring these products to school will be required to turn them into the office for a parent to come and pick up the item.
We thank you for your cooperation in helping our school community. We work to nurture a sense of belonging and inclusiveness by ensuring that those who have allergies and sensitivities are safe and fully included at school and work.
