DRESS for the WEATHER!
This is a reminder to all students to dress appropriately for the winter weather. We send students outside for recess as often as we can to provide each child the chance for some fresh air and a chance to be active. Thank you for your attention to this. :)
Let's Take a Look Into Our Classrooms:
ART
Kindergarten and grade one students were challenged to turn primary colors into secondary!
Second graders completed their star ornaments.
Congratulations to the third graders on a job well done at our holiday concert, especially the Grinch!
GYM
In PE class this week, Kindergarten students are joining in the fun of Snowman Down! They’re practicing their throwing skills and agility as they work to knock over other teams’ snowmen while protecting their own. It’s a high-energy game that encourages coordination and quick thinking, all while keeping things exciting and fun.
For grades 1-3, we’re adding a new layer of challenge to Snowman Down. Students begin by playing individually to focus on their throwing accuracy and agility. Then, we’re introducing a team-based version of the game, which adds an element of strategy as they work together to protect their snowmen and outsmart opponents.
This week, we’re also discussing the concept of a pivot foot, teaching students how to use it effectively to avoid traveling while keeping control during gameplay. It’s been a great opportunity to blend movement skills with teamwork and strategic thinking!
LIBRARY
Students are all working on their coding skills this week as a continuation from last week. They are enjoying learning to code using the games on the Hour of Code. Great job everyone!
MUSIC
K-2: All classes enjoyed watching the 3rd graders perform their Winter concert for the school this week. We also started using the boomwhackers to some fun holiday tunes!
3rd: Congratulations to the 3rd graders on a job well done! Your performance was wonderful and I am so proud of each and every one of you for all of your hard work. I hope that you enjoy the holiday season!
KINDERGARTEN
Our Wonders’ question of the week was “What places do you go to during the week?” Kindergarten students discussed places they go to like: Walmart, Target, gymnastics, the library, the gas station, hockey practice, etc. We read the story Please Take Me for a Walk by Susan Gal. In this story a persuasive little puppy gets his owner to take him for a walk through the neighborhood where he gets to visit the florist, the grocer, the baker, the bookseller, the butcher, and lots of dog friends in the park.
We introduced two new letters/sounds: x & y as well as a new sight word, “go”.
In math, students have been working on addition and subtraction within 5. Using manipulatives, the children modeled addition and subtraction stories to show getting more or taking away.
Thank you to all the families that have sent in a donation for the Lakeville Animal Shelter. Representatives from the Animal Shelter will be here on Thursday, December 19th so there is still time if you’d like to send in a little something for our local dogs and cats. We look forward to seeing you all at parent/teacher conferences on the 12th.
GRADE 1
This week students are learning about people who help out in our community. We about a very generous teacher from Columbia who liked to provide books for the children to read in the surrounding villages. He made a traveling library that was carried to the various villages by his two donkeys, Alpha and Beto. The children of the villages are always so excited for his visit!
In math, students were working on solving addition and subtraction word problems within 20. They also are focusing and working hard on their ST math puzzles. Which first grade class will take the win? We can’t wait to find out next week!
Our learning of Holidays Around the World has been so wonderful! Students have visited the countries of France, Mexico, China and more! It has been so fun learning about how holidays are celebrated and what things are similar to how we might celebrate and how things are different.
GRADE 2
In Grade 2 students have been busy learning about different holidays around the world. Students travel from class to class learning about a different country’s holiday culture and creating a craft to bring home. In Wonders, we started unit 2. Our essential question was, “ How are offspring like their parents?” We read and discussed text features within our text. In math, we continued to work on bar graphs and picture graphs. Students also enjoyed grade 3’s holiday concert on Tuesday! We enjoyed seeing all of our grade 2 families during parent teacher conferences. It has been an exciting week!
Grade 3
In Grade 3 we are busily learning about different holiday cultures, while wrapping up Unit 2 in both math and reading. The children are in a perpetual state of happiness and excitement and it’s a joy to see! Lots of holiday activities are happening around the building; it’s quite festive!
