Cedar Hill Football Opens 2024 Season at Midlothian
The Cedar Hill High School Football Team will kick off the 2024 season at 7 p.m. on Friday, August 30 at Midlothian - two successful football programs whose home stadiums are located just 10.1 miles apart.
It will be the Longhorns' first game against the Panthers since 2015, when Joey McGuire was Cedar Hill's head coach. Cedar Hill won that game, at Midlothian, 52-13. It was current Midlothian head coach Doug Wendel's first season leading the Panthers.
Both Cedar Hill and Midlothian enjoyed postseason success in recent years. The Longhorns finished 8-6 and qualified for the 6A-II State Quarterfinals. The Panthers went 8-3, with a 40-37 loss to Justin Northwest in the 5A-I Playoffs.
Friday's game against Midlothian will mark the first time since 2020 that the Longhorns have not opened the season against Rockwall.
Cedar Hill second-year head coach Nick Ward and assistant head coach Brice Musgrove were on the Midlothian staff in 2022 when the Panthers went 12-1 and nearly upset Aledo.
SCRIMMAGE AGAINST SOC
Cedar Hill second-year head coach Nick Ward was encouraged by the Longhorns' performance in last Thursday's scrimmage against South Oak Cliff, 2021 and 2022 5A State Champion and 2023 5A State Runner-Up.
"We are way farther along than we were at this time last year," Ward said. "We're more confident in what we're doing and more confident in each other. We walked into the scrimmage as the better team. SOC is a team that could play at any level, and they're just as aggressive as a Duncanville or DeSoto."
Ward's brother, Kyle, is the defensive coordinator for SOC. He knows many of the Golden Bears' coaches, including head coach Jason Todd. In Ward's final high school game at Seagoville in the 1990s, he faced a Dallas Lincoln team that included Todd (and was coached by Reginald Samples).
SEASON OPENERS & ROAD OPENERS
Cedar Hill is 11-9 in its last 20 season openers, but the Longhorns will try to snap a three-game losing streak in season openers.
CHHS is also 11-9 in its last 20 road openers, with wins over Arlington (2020) and Arlington Martin (2023) over the past four years.
