"Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear—not absence of fear. Except a creature be part coward it is not a compliment to say it is brave; it is merely a loose misapplication of the word. Consider the flea!—incomparably the bravest of all the creatures of God, if ignorance of fear were courage.
Whether you are asleep or awake he will attack you, caring nothing for the fact that in bulk and strength you are to him as are the massed armies of the earth to a sucking child; he lives both day and night and all days and nights in the very lap of peril and the immediate presence of death, and yet is no more afraid than is the man who walks the streets of a city that was threatened by an earthquake ten centuries before.
When we speak of Clive, Nelson, and Putnam as men who "didn't know what fear was," we ought always to add the flea—and put him at the head of the procession."
Mark Twain —Pudd'nhead Wilson's Calendar.
I hope this message finds you ready for a chuckle courtesy of Mark Twain, my favorite literary humorist. In one of his lesser-quoted works, Twain offers us an unconventional hero: the flea.
Twain admires this creature's boundless bravery, it leaps into action, undeterred by the enormity of its adversaries. It does this not because it knows better but because it doesn't. As Twain Says, "the bravest of all the creatures of God, if ignorance of fear were courage." It's a funny but poignant reminder that courage isn't about the absence of fear, but about facing it head-on.
Let's discuss something closer to our everyday lives—standardized tests. Like our friend the flea, our students occasionally face a seemingly colossal challenge. The tests loom large, stirring up nerves that could rattle even the bravest souls. But remember, it's not about feeling no fear; it's about managing it and moving forward anyway.
So, as our students prepare for their upcoming exams, let's remind them that it's perfectly okay to feel a bit like a flea at a human picnic—small, perhaps, but mighty in courage. They're not alone in their worries, and it's their ability to march forward despite those jitters that genuinely makes them brave.
Let's cheer them on as they jump into these challenges, confident that they too can master their fears, one question at a time.

Jefferson Feeder Art Showcase
Did you know that the IB Programme Model aims to achieve a balanced person through equal attention and value to the arts like other subjects including science, language, and mathematics? This is why we ensure our students have an outlet to express themselves, whether through choir, visual arts, band, or dance.
This past week, Jefferson High School hosted the Jefferson Feeder Art Showcase! Our Woodlawn eagles' artwork was a stand out in a space full of art from talented artists. Woodlawn PYP students took home 5 out of 6 total awards for ALL K-5 students for the cluster!! We also had two students from our 6-8th grade place as well! Jr. VASE Competition
Woodlawn is proud that at the Jr. VASE art competition we had medalists in all divisions, Division 1 (Art 1), Division 2 (Art 2), Division 3 (Art 3). These students have been creating a piece of art on their own and coming in after school all year to work on their art pieces. They presented their artwork to a judge and were interviewed about their process.
Congratulations to Emma Lopez, Liyah Gallardo, Lucy Garza, Mia Foster, Samantha Muro and Veronica Lopez.
