Welcome to the 11th edition of Dorm Happenings. It has been a very busy week here at the Howser Dorm on the beautiful campus of KSB.
On Sunday, we got the ball rolling here on campus with a welcome back to the dorm meal as the girls special meal was Arby's, and the boys had a meal of lasagna, and garlic toast with an assortment of deserts and drinks. On Monday after a school, we had an adventure day as we booked reading and scary stories in preparation for Halloween. The students also had opportunities to tell their favorite fall or Halloween trip or fun times trick or treating. On Tuesday evening after a fine meal prepared by Ms. Renee and the food service staff we had a fun time at the recreation gym. Elementary students were involved with bicycle riding, time on scooters and the bouncy mat. They also heard Halloween stories by Mr. Larry and yours truly.
The middle school and high school students got to spend time outside at the Gazebo making smores and setting around the campfire and telling scary stories and about some of their funniest moments on campus or at school during the fall of the year. On Wednesday evening Mr. John Aaron with his dogs Bella and Olive came to the dorm for a visit and as always, the students were happy to see the dogs and the dogs were for sure happy to see them. Mr. Aaron and his wife do a great job with the dogs and the students, we appreciate them very much. Then refreshments were served in the recreation gym kitchen area.
On Thursday we got some much-needed rain for our area, but it certainly did dampen the spirits of our dorm crew as we were all set for our annual " Trick or Treating" around the neighborhood. Mr. Larry Rhodes, our recreation director, and the Howser staff did an AMAZING!! Job of improvising and making it possible to do some trick or treating on campus and remaining in the dry. After on campus trick or treating the students went to the recreation gym for some pizza, drinks and cookies and watched Ghost Busters on the big screen TV. Another group of students spent time playing air hockey, shuffleboard and listening to the radio in the gym.
It was another good week here on campus at KSB.
Our staff recognition for October will be Mr. Larry Rhodes. Mr. Rhodes is a lifetime educator and has worked in multiple school districts around the commonwealth of Kentucky. Mr. Rhodes was a tennis coach, middle school basketball coach, assistant athletic director and academic team coach as well as special education teacher at Harlan City schools. Mr. Rhodes spent 18 years at Shelby County High School as special education teacher, Director of Credit Recovery and Drop Out Prevention Coordinator, and was also Academic Team coach and assistant athletic director. Mr. Rhodes retired from Shelby County in 2017 and spent the next 5 years helping take care of his grandchildren and took up the hobby of beekeeping. Mr. Rhodes is now well known around Jefferson, Shelby, Henry and Spencer county as the "Bee-Man" and proud producer of Uncle Larry's Honey.
Mr. Rhodes is proud to be working with the students and staff at KSB and enjoys planning recreation outings and activities for the students here at the Howser dorm. Mr. Rhodes was also a car salesman at Johnny Watkins Chrysler, Jeep, Eagle in London Kentucky for 20 years. He attributes this to his ability to talk with people and have such a large network of people that he knows all across the state of Kentucky. We are lucky to have Mr. Rhodes here at KSB guiding our recreation program and working with our students.
Just a reminder that KSB will not be in session on Monday November 4th and Tuesday November 5th, but students will return to the dorm on Tuesday November 5th and school will be back in session on Wednesday November 6th.
So, enjoy the long weekend and remember to go vote.
