This time of the school year always feels busy and we really are busy. Even a shortened week of school for students is busy with Parent/Teacher conferences and setting up for the Fall Carnival.

The Fall Carnival is a great example of the kinds of community-wide events that happen at McNeil. There are great opportunities to help as a volunteer with these kinds of events and the monies that are raised through all the activities are hugely important for funding so many of the activities that teachers plan for their classes throughout the school year. The Carnival is one of two big events that make a tremendous difference in the fund raising for our school community. Your involvement in these events is a key to their success and we could not do it without you.

In fact, the success of McNeil Canyon Elementary is directly related to the level of involvement of our parents and other community members. Please stay connected to the events and happenings that will be posted in the Dragon Tales and Magpie newsletters throughout this year.

Our picture retake day is Thursday, October 31st. If your student missed the original picture day or you are wanting a re-do of your student's original photos then this is the day to do it. Please make sure to send your student's original photo package with them for retakes. For those that never took pictures, order forms are in the front office or you can click the link below to place an order online. The school code is EVT2ZK6FM.

Our Site Council will have it's next meeting on Tuesday, November 12th at 3:15. Parents are welcomed to attend.

On Saturday night, Nov. 2nd, remember to set your CLOCK BACK ONE HOUR before you go to bed. Daylight saving time ends on Sunday, November 3rd at 2:00am.

Friday, November 15th is an early release day. School will end at 1:20 and buses will arrive at their stops an hour and a half earlier than normal.

There will be no school on Thursday, November 28th and Friday, November 29th. We wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving!

The following students have been selected as Spotlight Students for the month of November: Kalista Barrett, Ty Conley, Killian Kincaid, Jasper Alvarez, Liliana Drake, Larkin Young, Katrina Montoya, Iyla Turkington, Theron Martushev, Benn Deakins, Jesa Fairbanks, Scarlet Noffke, Mitsue Olson, Ruslaan Kandror, Piper Huff, Occia Pariyar, Branson Switzer, Story Geysbeek and Malia Hopper.

Parents are invited to join their child and the principal for lunch on Tuesday, November 19th at 11:55 am.

Spotlight Student forms are being sent home with these children on Monday. Please return them as soon as possible so they can be placed on our Spotlight Student bulletin board. Thank you!!

For our families that are already making travel plans in December, we'd like to give you a heads up about our winter concert that will take place Thursday, December 5th at 6:30pm. All of our students have been working hard for many months with Mr. Arnold to make their concert special. We hope to see you all there!

The McNeil Canyon Biathlon Club is offering an after school program for McNeil Canyon Elementary students 2nd grade through 6th. Permission slips will be sent home with 2nd - 6th grade students on Friday, November 1st. The group will be limited to 20 students and there are special requirements for the program. Please make sure to pay special attention to the cover sheet on the permission slip.

Anne Love is our returning after-school cross country ski coach and she is looking for a helper who is experienced with sizing to help size kids next month in preparation for beginning the ski program.

We are hoping to start our Skiing program on Mondays after Winter Break. We also need parent helpers every Monday once the ski program starts. How many helpers we have will determine how many skiers we can have. You must be a KPBSD approved volunteer to help. Please contact Anne at alove@kpbsd.k12.ak.us or call the school office.
