February, 2019
Mrs. Katie Towler, Career Academy Principal
When most people think of February they think of the Super Bowl, or of hearts and candy and flowers. As a principal I think of registration. We are wrapping up the scheduling season for the high schools, and as we look to the future and what courses our students tell us are important I think it is interesting to reflect upon the progress we’ve made as a district career and technical education (CTE) program.
Not only have we moved into a brand new state of the art facility this year, but we’ve also grown by 2 pathways. We started the first class in the Agriculture pathway in January and will begin the Biomedical Science pathway in August of 2019. We are listening to what our community needs and what our students are interested in and making those adjustments to our programing. I hope as your students bring home information about registration you will talk with them about their passions and plans for the future and encourage them to consider a pathway or class at the Career Academy.
While registration is due soon, it will not be finalized until you have had a chance to verify their requests at parent teacher conferences in late February. If you have questions about our offerings, or would like to see what we are doing for yourself, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
As always, thank you for partnering with us.
Mr. Jeff Lucas, Career Academy Guidance Counselor
Course registration for the 2019-20 school year is currently going on. Career Academy students who have questions about course offerings for next year may stop by the counseling office in the Career Academy over the next two weeks to discuss options. All 2019-20 course registration requests must be submitted by Friday, February 15th.
Seniors: If you have not submitted your FAFSA for financial aid to the college you are planning on attending in the fall of 2019 and need assistance, please see Mr. Lucas in the office. Some schools’ priority deadlines have already passed and many priority deadlines are quickly approaching!
Juniors: Spring is a great time to start taking college visits to schools you have an interest in. Be checking college web sites for upcoming visit days. We will be discussing college options and campus visits as part of the College and Test Prep course at the Career Academy this semester.

Interior Design Pathway - Mrs. Jill Risdal
Interior Design is a program that prepares students to apply artistic principles and techniques to plan, design, equip, and furnish interior spaces. The curriculum includes instruction in computer applications and hand drafting, color coordination, furniture and furnishings. We also learn about the history of period style houses, basic structural design and applications to housing design.
The following courses are included in the Interior Design Career Pathway:
Exploring FCS Pathways: This course is offered at each the three home high schools. The goal of this yearlong course is to provide students with an introduction to Family and Consumer Science and Human Services. The FCS Career Pathways are Culinary Arts, Early Childhood Education and Human Development, Interior Design and Fashion. Students will acquire fundamental knowledge and skills necessary for success in any of the career pathways.
Sewing Technology Basics: This course is designed to provide students with a foundation of basic sewing techniques, including the use of equipment, patterns, preparation and basic sewing skills. Some of the projects created are a pincushion, pillowcase and pajama pants. This is a one- semester class.
Design Studio: This course is the foundation for students considering careers in interior and fashion design. This class is an introductory course focusing on the elements and principles of design, aesthetic awareness, problem- solving and developing observational and technical skills. We will look at design through the lens of both interior design and fashion. Some of the projects created in class are making a creative color wheel, planning a theme party, and designing a dream room. This is a one- semester class and can take it as a fine arts credit.
Interior Design Studio: Students will further their research, implement and apply design concepts common to interior design. Students will learn about different housing styles, floor plans, furniture arrangements, color schemes and accessories used in the home. Students will have many opportunities to work with industry business partners and go on many field trips to explore careers and learn about a variety of topics by exploring and learning from the experts. Some of the field trips include visiting architect firms, furniture stores, kitchen stores, and flooring stores. Guest speakers visit often to share their expertise with the students. Students design a dream house as the final project.

District and School Climate Survey Coming in February
Every voice matters in Sioux City Community Schools. That’s why we need to hear from all parents and guardians in our District and School Climate Survey, which is coming in February
Parents should check their email for an invitation and survey link and will be able to take the survey in English or Spanish.
The survey asks for feedback on student and academic support, safety and behavior, school leadership, and family involvement. We will use the results to better understand our needs, determine our strengths, and identify opportunities for improvement.
All survey responses are strictly confidential. The district has partnered with independent research and communications firm K12 Insight to administer the survey and compile the results. No one from the district will know who participates or how they respond. Watch for more details to come!
