AUTUMN TERM - 5th DECEMBER 2024
Message from the Executive Headteacher
HISN is now fully prepared for Christmas, the hall has been decorated by the children and staff and we are looking forward to welcoming you to the Christmas shows next week. We have already sent out all the communication regarding the shows and the dates and times are on the What's Happening This Christmas link below if you need to check. We are able to accommodate two guests per child and we ask that you do not bring small children if at all possible. A reminder that the dress rehearsals will be filmed and we will request that you do not record the actual performance.
It was wonderful to see so many of you at the Christmas Fair on Saturday, the event was very well attended and it raised some much needed funds for HPPA - thank you to all the volunteers who worked so hard to make it such a success. HPPA will be sending out further information regarding the charity before Christmas.
We are also very busy with visits out of school; Reception children successfully posted letters at the post box on Holly Bush Lane, Year 1 children visited All Saints Church, Year 2 went on a Christmas journey to St Michael's Church in Fulwell and a group of children today sang Christmas songs at Linden Hall. Thank you to all the parent volunteers who have accompanied the children on these visits.
Tomorrow at pick up HPPA will be selling second hand Christmas jumpers, and next week we are collecting wrapping paper for charity, drop off will be at the office.
The HISN Christmas post-box is in operation currently, please ensure the full name and class is clearly written on the envelope and remind your child to post the card - last day for posting is Monday 16th December.
I look forward to seeing you at the shows next week and enjoy the weekend.

NHS Guidance to Help Keep Your Child Healthy This Winter
With flu and norovirus cases on the rise, here are four simple steps to help keep your child healthy this winter.
1. Teach good hygiene habits: Encourage children to wash their hands regularly and use a tissue to catch coughs and sneezes to stop the spread of germs.
2. Know when to keep your child at home: Children can still attend school with symptoms such as a runny nose, sore throat or slight cough, but should stay home if they have a high temperature, diarrhoea and vomiting. Read NHS guidance to help you decide.
3. Stop the spread of stomach bugs: Stomach bugs spread easily in schools. If you or your child have diarrhoea and vomiting, wash hands with soap and warm water regularly and clean surfaces with bleach-based products. Keep children away from school until they have not been sick or had diarrhoea for at least 48 hours.
MHST Coffee Morning: Managing Emotions
On Tuesday 14th January at 9am we will be holding a parent coffee morning in the Rose Hall at Hampton Junior School.
The coffee morning will be led by Jess Butler, the Child Wellbeing Practitioner allocated to our school from the Mental Health Support Team.
Jess will be doing a presentation around what emotional literacy is, as well as tips for promoting emotional literacy and effective emotion regulation at home. Following the presentation there will be the opportunity to ask questions and to share your tips and experiences with other parents and carers.
Parents from HISN and HJS are welcome to attend.

🟨 Nursery
The Christmas vibes are starting in Nursery! The children have been very busy elves as they decorate the classroom ready for our Christmas celebrations. We have seen beautiful Christmas tree displays, where they use their funky fingers to hang baubles and wind Christmas lights around the branches. The children have also been so excited to create Christmas paper chains too. Using red, white and green paper, the children have been stamping Christmas pictures, then linking them to create a long Christmas chain and challenging ourselves to see how long we can make it.
Keeping in the Christmas spirit, the children went into the hall for the first time to practise their Christmas singing. The children were so proud as they stood on the stage and sang their hearts out. We can't wait for you to see our show - it truly is magical watching them.
Thank you all for uploading your family portraits. It has been wonderful to see the children's confidence blossom as they share what they like to do as a family, their favourite foods and what their family's favourite colours are. The children spoke so confidently and listened brilliantly too, asking lots of fantastic questions.
We are looking forward to our learning next week as the Christmas countdown continues.......
Time to talk Nursery
We all know how important talking at home is for exposing children to a wide range of vocabulary and ideas. This all helps them with their reading and to become future writers. Each week we will share an idea with you for 'talk homework' with your child.
This week, you could talk to your child about how you celebrate Christmas. What traditions do you have as a family? If you don't celebrate Christmas, are there any other traditions you celebrate at this time of year?
🟥 Reception
It has been another busy week in Reception. The children were excited to come in on Monday to find their class Christmas tree up and ready for decorating. The children had fun dressing it themselves (more is more!) and making their own decorations for the classroom. We have been practising our Christmas Nativity show and the children have amazed us with how well they've learned the actions and songs. The children looked wonderful in their costumes for the dress rehearsal and they can't wait to show you the final performance.
The post-box visits were another highlight this week. There was much excitement about being out of school with their classmates and the children loved pushing their envelopes through the slot. We hope you enjoy receiving their Christmas card in due course. Thank you so much to everyone who volunteered and made it possible.
In maths we are matching equal amounts to a numeral or pictorial representation of a number. In Phonics we have introduced four new sounds: /k/, /l/, /r/ and /u/ which the children are practising reading and writing in vc and cvc words.

🟦 Year 1
We began this week on a very Christmassy note with our visit to All Saints Church. We enjoyed taking part in a treasure hunt to look at the different features of a church and listening to the church bell. We also completed some art activities. Thank you to all the parent helpers that accompanied us on our visit as we couldn’t do it without you.
In the build up to Christmas, we have have been continuing to practise for our ‘Nativity’ show. We cannot wait to perform in front of an audience next week. A gentle reminder that all costumes need to be brought into school by tomorrow, Friday 6th December. Please speak to the class teacher if you have any questions or are struggling to find any items.
In English, we have continued to focus on the story ‘Little Robin Red Vest’. We have been writing our own character descriptions based on the story using adjectives and the conjunction ‘and’.
Maths - we have been learning about 2D shapes and discussing how many sides and corners each shape has. We have also spent some time recapping the names of 3D shapes.
Science - we have been continuing our work on materials and looking at the different properties of each. We were asked to design an umbrella for teddy and conducted some investigations to see which material would be the best as keeping teddy dry. We used the vocabulary "absorbent" and "waterproof" during our experiment.
🟩 Year 2
Year 2 have been working hard this week to prepare for the Christmas show, and we are so proud of how well they have learned the songs and actions. At the end of last week, we asked the children who would like to say a part in the show, and at the beginning of this week, we sent home their lines. Please support them by practising their lines at home to help them feel confident and ready for next week.
We would also like to kindly remind you to send in their show outfits by tomorrow, Friday, 6th December. Each child will need:
Named black leggings/trousers
A named Christmas or party jumper
Everything packed in a clearly labelled bag (name and class).
Reminders of show times (10.12.24):
2B/2D – 9:15
2M/2P – 10:30
In English, we have been working hard continuing with our non-fiction book all about our class pet. The children have been focusing on several key sections such as their appearance, explained what it eats in its diet, and explored its natural habitat. Additionally, they have included three fascinating facts to capture the readers’ interest. To finish, they created a glossary, where the children carefully explained the meanings of some tricky words to help their readers understand the text better.
In maths, we have been putting our addition and subtraction skills to the test by solving number sentence problems. First, the children worked on calculating the answers to number sentences. Then, they applied their understanding of comparison symbols such as greater than (>), less than (<), and equal to (=) to compare the results. We also explored missing number problems, such as 10+6=13+___ which challenged the children to think critically about balancing equations. To support their learning, we used tens frames as a visual tool to help break down and solve these problems.
In geography, we have been developing our map-reading skills. The children have been exploring the concept of maps and their features, including how to use a key effectively. As part of this learning, they created a map of our school, complete with a key to identify and locate different rooms and areas within the building. To make their maps functional and meaningful, the children practiced giving clear directions to help someone navigate from the school office to our classroom.
We really enjoyed our Christmas wrap DT project. To begin, the children taste-tested all the available ingredients and carefully evaluated each one, giving it a ranking out of 5 based on flavour and preference. This helped them decide which ingredients they wanted to include in their own wraps. Once the selections were made, the children assembled their wraps, putting their cutting and spreading skills to use. The wraps turned out to be a success, and everyone agreed they were incredibly yummy. We would like to thank parents and carers for contributing to the purchase of ingredients, making this project possible.
Year 2 Christmas Journey to St Michael's Church
Christmas Paper Amnesty
HPP will be supporting Cocoon, a charity that hosts a Christmas Day event for around 55 care leavers. Care leavers are young people who grew up within the care system within Richmond, Kingston and Hounslow. They are now adults who are aged 18-25 years and without this event they would sadly spend the day alone. This is their 8th year and HPPA have offered to help this year by collecting donations of wrapping paper as they will be wrapping for around 50 adults and 5 children. The charity are totally reliant on donations of EVERYTHING (from turkeys to crackers!) and your kind donations mean they don’t have to raise funds to buy wrapping paper. Please see their website for more information - a huge thank you from all at Cocoon for helping.
We will have a box available in the school office for all donations of wrapping paper (be this full or half rolls of Christmas paper) the week commencing 9th December. Thank you for your support.
The well being and safety of our children is everyone's responsibility. If you have concerns about a child please contact SPA on 547 5008 or out of hours on 0208 744 2442.
