TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK - May 6-10
Teacher appreciation week is 5/6-10. The PTA has some wonderful things planned and below are areas where you/your student can be a part of it:
•Sunday, 5/5 @5pm: chalk their walk, just show up to the school and bring chalk!
•Tuesday- The PTA is planning to send a breakfast cart around to the classrooms for teachers to enjoy fresh fruit, donuts and breakfast bars. Mr. Dreves is going to dress up in a tuxedo and provide butler service of snacks and drinks. If you’d like to contribute to the breakfast, please send $5 donations to PTA Venmo @ UNESPTA and note teacher appreciation.
•Tuesday, 5/7 @ 4pm- The PTA needs a group of volunteers to help post notes of appreciation to our teachers and staff outside their doors. Please email unespta@gmail.com if you’d like to help!
•Parents/caregivers AND students: please send in (very) short messages of appreciation for your teacher and/or administrator by Friday, 5/3. *The message has to fit on a post-it. Send message with teacher/admin name it’s meant for and who it’s from to unespta@gmail.com
•Thursday, 5/9 there will be a parade for the teachers. The morning of 5/9 please send your student in with a sign they’ve created with a message of thanks/appreciation for their teacher (or teachers in general). * If you’d like to contribute to the decor for the halls (balloons/streamers, etc), please send $5 donations to PTA Venmo @ UNESPTA and note teacher appreciation. You can also volunteer to help decorate the halls @4pm Wednesday night, just email the PTA at unespta@gmail.com
PAUL FORBES FOCUS GROUPS
Paul Forbes, our equity consultant, will be returning to Upper Nyack Elementary on May 8 & 9 to conduct small group focus groups. The main focus is on staff focus groups, but I'd like to build in some community members. For the parent focus groups, they will ideally be comprised of diverse community members from varied backgrounds and diverse perspectives. They will be 45 minute group meetings limited to 8-10 individuals gathering in a safe space in the school conference room. If you would like to join us, PLEASE CLICK HERE to provide your information. Space is limited so, if interest exceeds our capacity, we may have to use a first come, first served approach.

Kindergarten Screening is Coming
We will be holding Kindergarten Screening on Monday, June 10th through Friday, June 14th. During this time, children will visit several kindergarten screening stations in our library such as the motor station, the concept station, and the language concept station. One of our kindergarten teachers will be spending time visiting with the children during the screening and getting to know them.
To schedule the kindergarten screening, please call Nurse Laura Weigel at 845-353-7270. The screening will take approximately 60 minutes.
REDHAWK TV HAS ARRIVED!!!
Dean Gianakouros has been working with students to highlight some of the great things that are going on at UNES in our new REDHAWK TV BROADCAST. He will be creating new episodes every two weeks.
LOST AND FOUND TO BE DONATED THIS FRIDAY
Over the course of this week, my staff will be placing our lost and found outside at dismissal so that the varied items that we have there can be reclaimed by families. Please take a good look as we will be donating all items this Friday, May 3.
REMINDER - Atttendance and Dismissal Changes
Attendance: Please call Linda Dellolio, the attendance secretary, at 845-353-7261 (PRIOR to 9:15AM) to notify us of your child's absence or tardiness. Kindly leave your child's full name, grade and teacher and the reason for their absence or tardiness. If you do not have time to call, you could email the main office secretaries at ldellolio@nyackschools.org or acontreras@nyackschools.org.
Please note there is no need to leave an absence message with Nurse Laura Weigel; however, should you need to speak with Nurse Laura about your child's absence or illness, please inform the attendance secretary and she will notify Nurse Laura to return your call.
Change in dismissal/early dismissal: In the past we requested hand-written notes (to the classroom teacher) outlining dismissal changes or early dismissal information; however, there have been instances where the classroom teacher was absent and the dismissal change WAS NOT passed along to the main office PRIOR to dismissal time.
To avoid this, we are now requesting all early dismissal and end of school day dismissal changes be telephoned into the main office (845-353-7261/7260; PRIOR TO 1:00 PM) or sent to the main office secretaries via email at ldellolio@nyackschools.org or acontreras@nyackschools.org.
Grade 4 & 5 Concert - May 22 @ 6pm at UNES
The Music Department happily invites our grades 4 & 5 families to our Spring Concert for Grades 4 and 5 on Wednesday, May 22, 2024 at 6pm at Upper Nyack Elementary School. The performance will be in the multi-purpose room and will be in person. We invite two parents/guardians per family to see your children perform. Please have your child dress in black and white. We know you will enjoy the concert and your children will be thrilled to have you in the audience.
Parking for the concert is extremely limited on the school property and in the surrounding areas.
Entrance to the concert will be through the cafeteria doors on the right side of the school only. The doors will open at 5:45 PM. Unfortunately, there is no reserved seating for this concert. Thank you in advance for your assistance, as we make this wonderful occasion successful.
UPCOMING COMMUNITY EVENTS
Please be aware of the following events coming soon. There is certainly no obligation to attend, but these are great opportunities to connect with the community and support our kids beyond the school day:
African American Day Parade and Festival - June 1 at noon
Goosetown Block Party - June 8 from 11am-2pm
24th Annual Rockland Pride Sunday - June 9 from 11am to 5pm
FIELD DAY IS COMING!!! - JUNE 7
On Friday, June 7th, we will hold our annual Field Day. (Rain Date - Monday, June 10th) While we love to have community participation, for safety reasons, we will be adapting our plan for parent participation.
This year, parents WILL ONLY BE ALLOWED ONTO SCHOOL GROUNDS BY A REGISTRATION PROCESS IN ADVANCE OF THE DAY. Only registered family members will be allowed to come and watch their children compete in events at the upper field behind the school. Anyone who has not PRE-REGISTERED will be turned away.
In our efforts to ensure that we keep our students safe, all family members will have to pass through a security checkpoint in front of the school on North Broadway and will be given visitor stickers to join us this day. No community members will be allowed to enter the grounds from the Nyack Field house direction, the side fence, or other entry points.
If you would like to attend field day, then EACH FAMILY MEMBER that is interested in attending must register on THIS SURVEY - CLICK HERE - to be on our pre-approved list to be allowed onto school grounds on June 7. All entries must be received by Monday, June 3. Thank you for your understanding. Our children's safety is our paramount concern.
