Maize South High School
May 2024
A message from Principal Ms. Becky Sailor
Greetings Mavs!
I can’t believe it’s already May! It will certainly feel like a sprint to the end as we finish this year strong. We have so much to do and celebrate between now and May 21st!
Teacher Appreciation Week
Teacher Appreciation Week is May 6th - 10th; we have the most hardworking and dedicated teachers at Maize South! Please help me in letting them know how much they are appreciated. A short email or note of appreciation and kind words goes a long way. We will celebrate and honor our teachers and staff this week with gifts of gratitude with our Teacher Appreciation theme, “The Great Outdoors/Camping.”
Senior Events
Leading up to Graduation, seniors have several other events to celebrate many of their accomplishments. Seniors will have a meeting this Thursday, May 2nd during Flex to review dates, events, and to-do’s coming up this month. Senior Awards will be at 6:30 pm on May 8th in the Auditorium. This is not a mandatory evening, but all senior families are invited to attend. We honor our senior’s academic honors as well as other awards, scholarships, and celebrate future plans. The last day for seniors to attend classes is May 14th. The Senior Parade will begin at 9:00 am on May 14th. Senior Breakfast will be May 16th at 8:30 am in the MSHS Commons, followed by Graduation Practice at 10:00 at Hartman Arena. The MSHS Class of 2024 will graduate on Thursday, May 16th at Hartman Arena. The ceremony begins at 6:30 pm. Senior parents and students - if you have any questions about graduation or preparation for the ceremony please reach out to an administrator, counselor, or senior sponsor.

Thirty-one Maize South Students Earn National Community Service Awards
This school year, 19 graduating seniors, 12 juniors, and 1 sophomore have earned recognition
from the United Nations Association of the USA as part of the seventh annual National
Community Service Awards administered by InnerView.org.
This program, open to all U.S. high-school students, engages young people in volunteerism and
documents their impact. Maize South first participated last year, and seven students won awards.
The tiered awards recognize student volunteer efforts from June 2023 to April 2024:
- Sophomore Grace Oard receives an Ambassador Award for more than 100 hours of service.
- Senior Muskaan Hayer receives an Honor Award for her more than 60 hours. Seniors Maya Adams, Xin Chen, Caroline Consolver, James Conway, Sofiya Florio, Mario Fuentealba, T Goode, MaKenna Majors, Steven Minor, Kate Quinton, Jenna Sokoll, Steve Ta, Austin Lindsey, Isaiah Lowe, Emersyn Harden, Kait Rummery, and Kaylin Jones each receive a Merit Award for more than 30 hours of service, and two of those students—MaKenna Majors and Kate Quinton earn their Merit awards for the second year in a row.
- Juniors Baylee Banning, Hudson Bean, Makenna Biggs, Lily Harder, Alyvia Herbig, Katelyn Lasater, Aubrey Scott, Olivia Short, Sydney Stehm, Erin Wilson, and Isaiah Thibodeaux also receive Merit Awards for their 30 hours.
- Seniors Brock Ellis and Emersyn Harden, along with juniors Sydney Stehm and Isaiah Thibodeaux, also receive special “Zero Hunger” recognitions from the Kroger Co. for their commitment to volunteer programs that reduce hunger.
All junior and senior awardees are active members of MSHS’s chapter of the National Honor
Society, and they earned their awards by exceeding the group’s service goals.
Together, more than 160 MSHS students recorded over 3,600 hours of community service on the
InnerView.org platform in the 2023-2024 school year. The web site estimates this as having a
community impact equivalent nearing $70,000.

College & Career Center
It’s never too early or too late for students to begin preparing for their future after high school.
Below are a few ideas for students as they plan for summer.
College Comparison charts are a great way to make sure students choose the college that best fits their needs. If you are in the class of 2025 college applications open July 1. Applications can be completed even before your senior year begins!
Campus visits allow students to gather information from an admissions representative and receive a guided tour of campus. If a student is interested in a particular major, upon request a visit to a specific department and advisor can be scheduled.
Scholarships - it is never too early for students to begin looking for scholarships. Two useful websites are www.scholarships.com and www.fastweb.com Remember, never pay for scholarship searches.
Volunteering -- Summer is an opportune time for students to give back to their community and possibly gain insight into a future career. Volunteering can make a difference, as well as, build personal growth and self-esteem.

2024-25 Immunization Notices Mailed to Homes This Week
Notices have been mailed to the Family 1 addresses of students who have immunizations due when school starts in August. Most of these notices are for the hepatitis A booster and/or the meningitis ACWY booster. Both of these immunization requirements have been ‘phased in’ over a number of years by grades. Therefore, some parents may not be aware of the requirements if this is the first year their children are affected by this school attendance requirement.
The meningitis ACWY: Two doses required. Dose #1 should have been given at the entry to 7th grade (11-12 years of age) and dose #2 should be given at entry to 11th grade (16-18 years of age) with a minimum interval of 6 months between the #1 and #2 doses. The #2 booster given before the 16th birthday is not considered valid. A curious aspect of the meningitis ACWY schedule is that some of our students entering the 11th grade are not yet 16 years of age. Therefore, the #2 meningitis ACWY immunization should NOT be given until after the student’s 16th birthday. The information is highlighted on your letter if your student has a summer birthday that requires that you WAIT to have the #2 dose until after the birthday.
Hepatitis A: Two doses required. Doses should be given at 12 months of age with a minimum interval of 6 months between the #1 dose and the #2 dose.
Legal alternatives to school vaccination requirements are found in KSA 72-6262.

From the Attendance Office
- If you need your student released during the school day, please contact the attendance office at 316-462-8000 as soon as possible so we can get a pass to them. The more advanced notice we have, the easier it will be to ensure your child is able to leave on time. If your child will be absent all day, please notify the school by 8:00am.
- Parents are strongly encouraged to call the school instead of coming into the building to have their student checked out. This will help reduce traffic through the front office.
- As defined in the BOE attendance policy, students have THREE school days to have a medical note turned into the office to excuse an absence.
- Parents are able to excuse SEVEN absences per class for the whole school year. Once seven has been reached, absences will be marked unexcused unless excused for a different reason.
- The accumulation of SIX absences in a block, per term/9 weeks, may result in no credit being granted. Credit may be granted pending a decision by a review panel. The review panel is available upon request by the student or parent.
- If you know ahead of time that your student is going to miss more than one day of school in a row, they're able to fill out an extended absence form. Completing this form will make sure those absences are excused. It requires signatures from all teachers, a parent, and an administrator. This form will need to be completed at least three days before the student is absent. You can access the form below.
Tardy Policy
- If your student is going to be tardy to school, please call the office. They are allowed THREE parent excused 1st block tardies per school year, after that they are subject to detention.
- Students are allowed TWO tardies per term. Once they reach their third tardy, a one hour detention will be assigned to them.
- Tardies reset every term.
- Tardies are defined as coming in late and missing 20 minutes or less of class time.
School Year Reminders
- If you need to pick up your child from school during school hours, please call the office with the time your child needs to be released. They will receive a pass ahead of time and can check themselves out at the requested time. The exception to this, is lunch time. If you wish to check your student out for lunch, a parent must come in and sign the student out. Parents are not required to sign students back in.
- When a student is absent, it is the responsibility of the parents to call the attendance office within 24 hours to verify the reason for the absence. Please be sure to provide a doctor's note to the front office when your child has seen the doctor, dentist, etc., these visits won't count against your child's attendance. Medical notes can also be faxed to 462-8001.
- If your child is absent and will require homework, please email the teacher.
- It is a district policy for all students to wear their school ID and lanyard at all times. If a student does not have their ID, they will be given a temporary name tag. Students will be issued detention once they have been given FOUR temporary name tags. IDs and lanyards can be replaced for $3 each.
- Because students are not allowed to bring balloons or glass items on the bus, the Maize school district will not be accepting any flower, candy, cookie, or balloon bouquet deliveries to students.
- We have a "closed lunch" policy. Students will be expected to eat at school and NO OUTSIDE FOOD may be brought in or delivered.
Thank you for your help with this. We appreciate it!
Driver Education
USD 266 Maize offers Online Driver Education each term during the school year. The online driver education program strives to prepare students to become knowledgeable and respectful of the law; to learn basic driving skills; and to develop a responsible attitude toward driving. The instructors will provide critical experience to students; involve parents in the process, and foster cooperative interaction with others in the driving environment. Students should be studying the Kansas Driver Handbook and be ready to take a handbook test at the start of the course. Students that have a Kansas Permit that is valid through the course dates will be exempt from taking the handbook test. More detailed information on Online Driver Education can be found on the high school website, (click on Counselor, Enrollment and Course Information, then Driver Education).
