Chamisa Elementary students shared their Kindness books
Elementary Speech Showcase
Seventeen elementary students representing Aspen, Barranca Mesa, Chamisa, Mountain and PiƱon Elementary Schools presented their speeches during the Elementary Speech Showcase. Some were serious, some were humorous, but all were well done!
Slime a Teacher Day
Schools around the district hosted the American Heart Association Slime a Teacher Day.
Hilltalkers in the News
Congratulations to these Los Alamos High School Hilltalkers!
- Eva Gerber and Ian Corey for earning a spot to the Council on National Affairs this summer. Ian and Eva were selected through a competitive application process through the NM Youth and Government program to attend CONA.
- Tevi Funaki who earned an entry to the National Speech and Debate Tournament in Des Moines in June. Tevi, along with Hilltalkers Erin Brodnax, Suchir Jha, Uxue Sansinena, Emily Xu, Zoe Bent, and Lin Wolf, will represent Los Alamos and New Mexico at Speech and Debate Nationals.
State Supercomputing Challenge
Mountain Elementary 6th grader Emmaline Fadner participated in the Supercomputing Challenge at Santa Fe Community College last weekend. She was the only elementary student among middle and high school participants from across the state. Emmaline used NetLogo to code her project, Modeling Urban Heat Islands and Rural Areas; she was honored with a Middle School Award, receiving both a plaque and a cash prize.
Emmaline impressed the judges with her creativity, confidence, and coding skills. Way to go, Emmaline!
In addition to her outstanding project, Emmaline nominated her GATE teacher, Mrs. Unal, for the Teacher of the Year award and wrote a thoughtful essay in her honor. Mrs. Unal was recognized as the 2025 Supercomputing Challenge Teacher of the Year.
Hiking trip
Mountain Elementary 1st graders took a hike along the Perimeter Trail, earning about the Cerro Grande fire, and measuring some of the new trees.
Math Night
Aspen Elementary hosted Math Night for students and families last week. Math Night will be at Mountain Elementary this Wednesday.
Field Day
Barranca Mesa Elementary held. Field Day for all students.
Pep Rally & PJ Day
Students at Los Alamos Middle School had some fun after testing with spring pep rally and pajama day.
Take Me Out to the Ballgame
LAHS Sports Lit students took a field trip to Isotopes Park.
Spring Arts Festival
Thank you to everyone who helped to make the 2025 Spring Arts Festival a success.
Animal Shelter Supply Drive
Chamisa K-kids is holding a Los Alamos Animal Shelter Supply Drive! We are asking for supplies to help the Los Alamos Animal Shelter. Supplies needed are:
- Animal toys
- Wet food ( no dry food)
- Paper towels
- Collars
- Leashes
Please drop donations in the blue cardboard box by the front office. Last day of donations will be May 15, 2025. If you have any questions please contact: Andrea Lynch a.lynch@laschools.net
Registration
LAPS is almost at 100% re-enrollments for the 2025-2026 school year. Currently, 2684 out of 3395 eligible returning students have completed registration for the 2025-2026 school year. That's almost 80%!
We encourage those remaining 711 students to complete registration by May 1. The Returning student registration form is available through the parent PowerSchool portal at https://laps.powerschool.com/public/home.html.

Summer Programs
Summer Reading Program
Los Alamos Public Schools is excited to participate in this yearās Literacy NM Summer Program. This program will provide small group specialized reading and writing instruction for students who have completed grades K-8. This program will take the place of the traditional summer school or camp that the district has provided in recent years.
All LAPS students who would like to improve their reading and writing skills are invited to enroll on the state portal- NM Summer Reading Program Website (www.literacy.nm.gov). Currently, families can express interest on the website, the official student registration will go live in March. LAPS will not be conducting a separate registration for the summer program.
Student hours will be 8:30-12:30 pm daily, June 5-July 3.
There will be no sessions on Thursday, June 19 in observance of the Juneteenth holiday.
The curriculum for the Literacy NM Summer program is Magnetic Reading.
The district will provide a bus to and from White Rock. This bus will pick up and drop off at Chamisa Elementary.
The YMCA offers an after camp program, which will also be housed at Barranca Mesa Elementary. After the morning session, students participating in the literacy program will be escorted to the YMCA camp. More information about the YMCA program can be found here https://laymca.org/summer.
LAHS Summer Programs
Los Alamos High School will be offering Summer PE, Summer Driver's Ed and Summer Credit Recovery. Registration opens May 1.

The Let Grow Independence Kit is filled with simple, age-appropriate activities designed for children from kindergarten through 8th grade. These activities encourage youth to stretch their wings, whether itās making a meal, running an errand, or organizing a neighborhood game. By trying new things on their own, children develop resilience, problem-solving skills, and a strong sense of accomplishment. Sit down with your child, choose a few challenges together, and watch them grow!

Saturday School is open to all Los Alamos Middle School and Los Alamos High School students as an opportunity to catch up on late work, complete missed assignments, take make-up tests and receive help with homework.Click here for more information.
