From the PTA President
Hello Hickory Hounds!
Even though there’s less than 10 days left of school your Hickory PTA isn’t slowing down! This month all our students will get to participate in the annual Field Days or Park Days. These events are completely volunteer run and we do rely on parents to help us put on a successful event. If you have availability to volunteer, please consider signing up for one of the available shifts.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to all the volunteers this year. Whether you assisted in the classroom, chaperoned a study trip, regularly volunteered, or lent a hand at a PTA event, your generosity and commitment did not go unnoticed, and I am incredibly grateful for you.
I also want take a moment to express my gratitude to this year’s Hickory PTA Board: Sunny Joo, Liana Osborne, Stacey Wong, Tricia Cole, Cathy, Uechi, Keri Kaba-Dien, Mary Ishida, Jayani Mannikage, Nichol Leone, Mrs. Leach, Mrs. Whitten, Mrs. Tyrrell, Mrs. Risk, Amanda Kirsch (Adventures in Art), Brittany Resendez (Copy Center), Sabrina White (Copy Center), Lina Awshee (DEI), Adrienne Downs (Healthy Ever After), Nilza Bertulano (Library), and Yelli Ramos (Membership & Hospitality). In addition to the hours they volunteer and the jobs they work, they take time out of their busy lives to ensure the success of all our programs. The dedication and energy they put into every Hickory PTA initiative truly reflects how much they care about the students, teachers, staff, and families at Hickory Elementary School. I am grateful to have been a part of this year’s board and look forward to continuing as PTA President for the upcoming school year. Have a wonderful summer and I’ll see you in August!
With gratitude,
Amy Brownstone

Field Trips Recap
Your fundraising and donations are what make programs like study trips possible! Thank you for supporting the Hickory PTA so that we can keep providing these enriching and memorable experiences for our students.
First and Second graders visited Tanaka Farms last month. The students, teachers, and chaperones were given a tour of the farm on tractors and were able to pick strawberries and vegetables to take home.
In January third graders attended a performance of Matilda at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center and then had lunch at Polliwog Park.
Fourth graders visited the Dominguez Rancho Adobe Museum to learn about early living in California. They toured the almost 200 year old adobe which sits in the city of Rancho Dominguez/Compton.
The fifth grade students went to the California Science Center in May. In addition to walking through the museum to view exhibits, they also watched the IMAX movie “Cities of the Future 3D”.
Jog-a-thon Prize Day Recap
On Friday May 17 we had our Jog-a-thon prize day. To celebrate reaching our fundraising goal of $50,000, we had school-wide popsicle party! Thank you volunteers who helped distribute over 850 popsicles to our classrooms.
Our top Jog-a-thon individual winners had an amazing time taking part in Hickory's leadership! Savannah L. was Principal for the Day, Donovan T. was Assistant Principal for a day, and Audrey B. was Class Librarian for the Day. They got to learn more about these important roles and take on some of the duties.
The top participating classes in each grade got to choose their own spirit day. The three top earning classes, Mrs. Kownacki's, Mrs. Bond's, and Mrs. Million's, got their own mini-carnival and prize room. Thank you to all of our volunteers and donors who helped with the games and prizes!
Adventures in Art Showcase
Adventures in Art had its Art Show on Friday, May 24 along with the schoolwide Student Showcase Day. On display were the 5 projects from the school year. Our Hounds had a great time learning about different artists and practicing various art techniques. Special thank you to Amanda Kirsch (AIA chair) and all of our volunteer docents!
Yearbook Final Update
Hickory Hounds from all grades were asked to submit pictures for the yearbook to show their dreams for the future. Here's what made it on the covers. The yearbook contains all the great submissions and many more pictures from throughout the year!
The front cover images were a combination of drawings by Yuzuki M. (2nd grade) and Mason K. (4th grade). The back cover was submitted by Olivia K. (2nd grade).
Students who purchased a yearbook will receive theirs in class the last week of school. There will be a small amount of books for sale in person. Please email Sunny at yearbook@hickorypta.net for details.
Lost and Found
The Lost and Found cart will be cleared for the year on June 12, 2024. Please encourage your child to stop by Room 31 near the front of the school to check for any misplaced items such as jackets, water bottles and lunch boxes.
