Principal's Message
Dear Parents and Guardians,
The month of May means that we near the end of another wonderful school year. As always I would like to take a moment to express my gratitude to each and every one of you. Your unwavering support and involvement have made a significant difference in our school community.
Together, we've witnessed incredible growth and accomplishments from our students. Their curiosity, creativity, and resilience have been inspiring. None of this would have been possible without your partnership in their education journey.
This month will be full of celebrations so please take note of important upcoming dates and events.

Counselor Corner
Hello Mustang families!
I can hardly believe we are in the last month of school-- this year seems to have flown by. It has been a year of changes & challenges, as well as lots of growth and fun! Marshall is a special place full of people who care so deeply about the students we serve. I feel lucky to be a part of this community. In the coming weeks before summer break, I encourage you all to talk openly with your child about all of their emotions related to the end of the school year, they can sometimes be complicated! Especially regarding the transition to a new grade level or even to a new school (looking at you, 5th graders!). Normalize whatever it is they may be feeling, and try to answer any questions they may have, if you can. If you can do anything to help ease their anxieties, or help them prepare, do it! Otherwise, use this summer break to rest, rejuvenate, and connect with your children.
Three things of crucial importance:
- Keep your children reading every day!! Students often lose months of reading progress over the summer break.
- Limit and monitor technology use!!
- Keep a semi-stable routine and bedtime, whether school is in session or not!!
Additional Resources:
- Help your child with the transition to Middle School: Middle School Transition Tips for Parents (https://www.greatschools.org/pdfs/trans_midschool_adults.pdf)
-Technology use, boredom, and the prefrontal cortex: Do you feel like your child struggles with self-regulation and emotional control? Do they seem to lack impulse control? Acting or speaking before they think? Screen time might be a part of the problem. As children spend more time on screens, whether it's used to stave off boredom, or to cope with uncomfortable emotions and stress– their brains are changing. Their prefrontal cortex– responsible for things like emotional control, executive functioning, impulse control, and decision making– is not getting much exercise. As this critical part of the brain grows weaker, what we see is an intolerance for distress-- a lack of endurance for challenging tasks, and difficulty coping with uncomfortable (yet normal) emotions. We see evidence of this in our schools every day. I urge you to read this invaluable and informative article: Yes, Really, Let Your Kids Be Bored- It's Good For Them. (https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/why-letting-children-get-bored-can-be-positive_uk_643e4691e4b04997b56d04d0)
We hope you all have a restful summer-- take advantage of a little extra time to enjoy the present moment with your families.
Be well,
