Planting in February?! UMN SROC puts it to the test!
On February 26th, 2024 the UMN Southern Research and Outreach Center planted a small demo of corn, soybeans and wheat after discussing what would happen if they planted row crops in February. Check out their Facebook page where they plan to post updates on their experiment throughout March and April!
Nominate a Family for 2024 Farm Family of the Year!
Both Nicollet and Sibley Counties are seeking nominations for the 2024 Farm Family of the Year. Annually, University of Minnesota Extension works with each County Extension Committee to honor an outstanding farm family or organization in their respective county. Those chosen cover a wide spectrum of farming, from traditional crops and livestock to community-based ventures focused on organics and traditional native foods. Award winners are chosen by local committees based on their demonstrated commitment to enhancing and supporting agriculture. Crop Management Update
2024 Crops Management Update on Thursday, March 7th from 10:00am - 2:15pm at the Gaylord Legion. Free event with lunch sponsored by the Nicollet/ Sibley Corn and Soybean Growers. University researchers and Extension Educators will discuss management considerations for the 2024 growing season. Topics include diseases and pests affecting corn and soybean growers, cover crops, weeds, nitrogen management, and nutrient considerations.
Dairy Producer Night Out
2024 Dairy Producer Night Out on Thursday, March 14th from 7:30pm - 9:00pm at Hahn's Dining & Lounge in Winthrop. Free event with supper included. Come enjoy an evening of learning and networking with other dairy farmers! Join Pam Uhlenkamp, Farm Business Management instructor at South Central College, as she utilizes 2023 year end numbers to evaluate farm finances and discusses examples of creative opportunities that have added cost savings and efficiencies to other dairy farms.
Alternative Tillage Event
Thursday, March 28th from 10:00am - 12:00pm at the Arlington Event Center. This event is free with lunch included. Speaker, Jodi DeJong-Hughes from the University of Minnesota Extension will discuss alternative tillage practices.
