As we move through October, we want to celebrate the Cardinals for a great start to the school-year! Students are the heart of positive school culture and day in and day out we see the way they positively connect with each other in class, during lunch and passing periods, and in co-curricular activities.
We also want to commend students who have spoken up when interactions haven’t seemed quite right. These courageous actions, which prioritize the well-being of others, give adults the opportunity to intervene in ways that foster a positive experience for everyone.
Importance of Attendance and Excusing Absences
We congratulate the 80 students who have maintained 100% attendance through the midterm, as well as the 147 Cardinals who have maintained 90-99% attendance. Research shows that students who attend at least 90% of the time experience higher academic achievement. In Corbett, 90% attendance means missing just 1-2 days per month. When a student frequently misses class, they miss the excellent instruction offered by Corbett’s staff.
That said, there are times a student must miss school. It is essential that parents excuse absences when their student is out for an approved reason (illness, family illness, medical/dental appointments, and emergencies.) Parents should contact Melinda Tester at mtester@corbett.k12.or.us or 503-261-4226 on the day of or immediately after the absence. We know parents are busy, so messages can be sent or left outside of school hours.
As outlined in the Corbett Student/Parent Handbook, students who miss school without parent permission are subject to disciplinary action. By excusing a student’s absence, a parent can ensure that their student does not have a consequence for what they considered an approved absence.
