Senior Seminar Speakers
Four County and Lapeer County Community Foundations
by Jade Insley
Last week in Senior Seminar, we had two guest speakers. On Thursday we had Siram Kour from Grand Valley State University and on Friday we had two guest speakers. One of the guest speakers was from the Lapeer County Community Foundation and the other guest speaker from the Four County Community Foundation. I will be talking about the guest speakers from the foundations who came in on Friday.
When we first came into the classroom the ladies had both set out a few informational papers for each student plus free t-shirts for anyone who wanted one. After we all grabbed those things, we all sat down and the ladies introduced themselves. They both told us about what their foundations do and how they can help us students by giving us scholarships for our future schooling. I really liked how they both went very in depth when talking about the scholarships and how they really encouraged us to apply because it's basically free money. It was also nice to find out that you can reapply for scholarships every year during college or during other future schooling, even if you’ve already applied and received the same scholarship in a previous year.
I am very glad our class had the opportunity for these ladies to come and talk to us about their foundations. The information they gave us, and talked about was very helpful and will be very beneficial in the future.
Grand Valley State University
by Isabella Weier
The speaker from GVSU came to talk to us on November 14th. Her name was Simran Kour. She spoke to us about the scholarships they provide, housing and dorms, their class sizes, the majors they provide, study abroad, and many other facts about the college.
I thought she was a good speaker. She did a good job covering everything we needed to know about the college. One thing I was interested in was their housing. They have normal dorms and on-campus apartments. They have 2 different first-year dorms.mOne fits 4 students and one fits 2 students. In the 4 student dorm, you have to share your bathroom with the other 3 people you are sharing the dorm with. In the 2 student dorm, you have a communal bathroom.
I am thinking of majoring in Early Childhood Education. Grand Valley does have my major. They have many different early childhood teaching programs.
After the speech, I liked Grand Valley a lot. Grand Valley has many things that I am looking for in a college. For example, they have my major, they have scholarships and they have decent housing. One thing I don’t like about this college is the distance away from my house. It is about 2 hours and 30 minutes away from my house. That is a little far for me. In conclusion, I enjoyed the speaker and I like most of the things about the college.
