The Last Day for Students is THIS MONTH!
They end the school year on Friday, May 31
There will be a June issue of D34 Family News to give you important end-of-year
(and look-ahead-to-next-year) information!
What’s On Your Plate? A Winning Recipe!
The Food & Nutrition Services Department is excited to announce the winner of the first ever "What's On Your Plate?" District 34 family recipe contest! This contest is all about sharing the culture, traditions and food in our community through favorite recipes.
Seventeen recipes were submitted, from appetizers to main dishes to desserts, with cuisines from Armenian to Indian, Bulgarian to Sri Lankan, American to Italian. The Food & Nutrition Services team selected four recipes that were adaptable to our food service abilities and requirements of the USDA school meal guidelines, and then they set out on a taste testing adventure. They prepared bite-sized portions of each recipe, and visited five schools and 14 classrooms plus middle school groups across the district throughout March. 330 students filled out rating forms to provide their feedback on the appearance and flavor of each food.
The recipes tested were:
Chicken Curry
Guacamole
Yum Yum Chicken
Zucchini Pesto Pasta
Based on student feedback, the winning recipe, submitted by the family of Lyon kindergartener Emmett Schad, is Yum Yum Chicken! Emmett will be serving Yum Yum Chicken at Lyon on May 7, when all K-5 schools will feature this meal on their menus. It will be on the menu at Springman and Attea on Friday, May 3.
Yum Yum Chicken has a Chinese flair but is a real Glenview creation, developed by Emmett’s mom Stephanie Ingraham. “I created this recipe right after Emmett was born and was looking for a quick, easy, healthy and fulfilling meal,” she says. “It’s been a monthly staple in our family ever since.”
“Introducing the family recipe contest allowed us the opportunity to share an important part of a child's culture – food – with the school community,” says District 34 Director of Food & Nutrition Services Stacy Lenihan. “The students were excited to see items at the sampling that they eat at home. It was even better when the students shared that our recipe was just as good as home!”
You can try Yum Yum Chicken at home; the original recipe from Emmett and his family is below. The Food & Nutrition Services adaptation of this recipe does not contain nuts. You can find nutritional information about any food on the school menu in the Choosi app.
The array of submissions highlighted the diversity and richness of our community! Look for news about the 2024-2025 contest in the fall of 2024.

From GNCY: May is Mental Health Awareness Month
You play a role in your family's mental health. Be their support. What’s your favorite greeting for your child when they get home from school or when you are back from work?
- I love you!
- Did you have a fun day learning? Or
- I’m so happy to see you!
Consistent and reassuring interactions positively impact a child’s mental health. Learn more about how to support them at all ages and stages. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has some great parent and caregiver resources on this topic at samhsa.gov/families/parent-caregiver-resources
Check Out Peachjar!
District 34's digital backpack is through a flyer communication tool called Peachjar. You should have received a welcome email from Peachjar that includes a username and password. This is provided to give you the opportunity to manage your account and flyer delivery preferences, but you do not need to log in to receive or view school digital flyers. When you receive your first eflyer, be sure to click “always display images.”
This system is used exclusively for distribution of school-approved flyers. Your email address will not be shared or used for any other purpose. You also will be able to visit your school’s website to see school-approved digital flyers by clicking the Peachjar button on each school’s website.
Note: Peachjar is free to our schools because community partners pay a small service fee to post and distribute digital flyers (typically much less than the cost to copy and deliver paper flyers).

Glenview School District 34 is a diverse, inclusive school district that serves approximately 4,400 students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade across three primary schools (Henking, Lyon and Westbrook), three intermediate schools (Glen Grove, Hoffman and Pleasant Ridge), and two middle schools (Attea and Springman). The primary and intermediate schools are organized in three clusters: Henking-Hoffman; Lyon-Pleasant Ridge; and Westbrook-Glen Grove. The D34 Pre School serves a blend of students with special needs and typically developing peers and is housed within Westbrook School. D34 enjoys support from parents and community members. Four Parent Teacher Organizations (one from each cluster, and one for the middle schools) provide volunteers, programs, and financial support to the schools they serve. The Glenview Education Foundation provides generous District-wide financial support for innovative initiatives that reach all students and the Debra Gelfand Children's Foundation supports students and families in need.
