Shepard Middle School, May 24, 2024
Dear Parents,
This week we celebrate and honor two retiring staff members! Dawn Saarva (pictured) teaches sixth grade math on the white team and has taught at Shepard Middle School for 28 years. Alongside being an excellent teacher, she is an avid, award winning golfer, gardener, and world traveler which she will be able to do even more of in this next chapter of life. Shepard's other retiree is Erica Yaffee
(pictured below) who aside from being an attorney, has worked at Shepard Middle School for ten years on the eighth grade teams as a teaching assistant. In retirement Erica looks forward to being able to travel at off peak times and enjoying all the little things that time affords. Both Dawn and Erica look forward to doing the things they love with the people they love. We wish them well and will miss them dearly.
Students ended the week enjoying the return of The Shepard Talent Show. There are a few pictures to enjoy below. There were so many wonderful acts from both students and staff. It was a blast!
As we head into Memorial Day Weekend, we remember and honor those in the United States Armed Forces who died serving our country. The weekend also signifies the unofficial beginning of summer. Enjoy family, friends and fun events safely.
Sincerely,
Dr. Theresa Dunkin, Principal
Mrs. Marie Zlotnikov, Associate Principal
Mrs. Ginger Logemann, District Coordinator of Student Services

On Tuesday had a true celebrity guest -- She is a known Chicago restaurateur and pastry chef, author and TV personality. She is the winner of the 2001 James Beard Foundation Award. Over 25 students stayed after school and learned how to make crapes. Gale is a Riverwoods resident and parent of DPS109 students.
As you know, we are not running a math summer booster for our incoming 7th or 8th grade students. We have received several parent requests, asking what students can work on over the summer. IXL will still be available to students, if they log in on their personal device. Here is a document with (optional) suggested skills to work on for incoming 7th and 8th graders, listed by math course.
Important Information
Graduation Information
Families of 8th Graders:
Eighth grade graduation will be here before we know it. Below find answers to some initial questions. We will continue to update our communication about the ceremony and activities as they become available.
Graduation Q/A:
1) When is graduation? Wednesday, June 5th, 2024. Students will need to arrive at DHS Auditorium at 4:30 pm. Please let us know by May 15th if your child will NOT be attending the ceremony.
2) Do students come to school that day? Yes. On Wednesday, eighth grade will be dismissed at 10 am to get home and prepare for graduation. There will be a bus to take them home if needed. Monday and Tuesday are regular school days.
2) Where is graduation? Graduation is held in the Auditorium at Deerfield High School (DHS)
3) What time is graduation? Graduation will begin promptly at 5:30 pm.
4) When will we receive our tickets? Students will bring tickets home following the graduation practice on June 4, 2024.
5.) How many tickets will each student receive? Each student receives 4 tickets for the ceremony (your 8th grader does not require a ticket). There are no additional tickets for graduation. Sometimes asking a friend if they need all 4 of their tickets can be a helpful way to find a extra ticket.
6.) When will students receive graduation gowns? Gowns will be distributed on June 4th. This is also the day that the class photo and individual graduation pictures will be taken.
7) Is there a student celebration after graduation? Our PTSO runs a celebratory event and will be distributing information about this. Sign up by today, May 24, 2024!
