Subject Highlights:
Each week will focus on a department within the school and share their nominations with you. This week our Computer Science team will be sharing their nominations with you.
Year 7:
During this term, Year 7 students have been engaged in the creation of their own magazine covers, utilising a variety of software tools. This project has required them to research the components of a magazine cover from a media perspective, develop wireframes, and understand both pre-production and post-production processes, culminating in the creation of a finished product. The students have predominantly used software such as Canva (online) and Photoshop (offline) for the first time. This unit has been particularly enjoyable for the students, as it has allowed them to exercise their creativity while acquiring new computer skills. Special recognition is due to David C, Nyah, Svetlana and Myles for their consistent enthusiasm and dedication throughout the term.
Year 8:
This term, the primary focus for Year 8 students has been understanding their digital environment and learning how to navigate it safely. The curriculum has covered topics such as malware, identifying phishing emails, and recognising trustworthy websites. Currently, we are concentrating on detecting fake news, a particularly relevant skill given the upcoming general election and the rise of AI-generated social media content. Special commendation is due to Adam K, Maciej K and Tarak for their exceptional work and diligent efforts throughout this term.
Year 9:
This term, Year 9 students have been studying the impact of Artificial Intelligence on various industries and its widespread application across the job market. The curriculum has included an exploration of the history of AI, with practical experiments involving the Turing Test on various chatbots, as well as discussions on the ethical and moral implications of AI implementation, referencing Elon Musk’s vision of AI implants. Additionally, students have had the opportunity to earn a recognised award through the iDEA digital skills charity, which stands for “Inspiring Digital Enterprise Award.” This initiative is particularly beneficial for students who have not chosen an IT subject in Key Stage 4, as it allows them to develop their digital skills. Special commendation is extended to Bradley, Saketh, and Lucas H for their consistently high-quality work throughout the term.
Year 10:
In Year 10, we would like to commend the exemplary attitudes towards learning demonstrated by several students and acknowledge the significant progress they have made. Special recognition is extended to Jennifer H, Sebi, and Kasper B for their outstanding efforts and achievements throughout the term.
Curriculum Focus:
Each week we will share with you what our students are learning in our focus departments this term, below you will find the topics for Spanish.
Year 7:
Year 7 students have been busy learning how to describe their town, including what amenities there are using the Spanish for ‘a’, ‘some’ and ‘many’. They can now tell the time in order to arrange meeting up; order food and drink in a café using the verb ‘querer’ (to want); say what they are going to do at the weekend using the near future tense as well as producing a piece of writing in which 2 tenses are used together.
Year 8:
Students have been learning how to describe what their ideal house would be like (using the conditional); give details about the activities they do during holidays; ask and give directions and understand people talking about a past experience in a summer camp.
Year 9:
Students are learning how to introduce themselves and others and respond to questions and explain their needs to a host family. They have also learnt more about Spain’s capital city and are able to discuss buying souvenirs and say what tourist activities they will do in Madrid tomorrow.
Year 10:
Students have been working hard to prepare for their first speaking exam, including how to conduct a role play task, the photo description task and then preparing to speak for a minute on their chosen topic of Family, Where I live, Free time or Holidays and have a conversation in Spanish for about 7 minutes on two themes. They have made an impressive start on their journey to the final exam next year! By the end of this term Year 10 students will have also completed Theme 2 and will be able to name a variety of shops and places in town; give and understand directions; buy souvenirs, presents and clothes; return clothes and explain why; understand the geography of Spain and talk about problems and advantages of living in a town.
