CAASPP Parent Letter

Dear PYLUSD Parents and Guardians,
As in previous years, this coming spring all students in grades three through eight and eleven will take the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA) in English Language Arts and Math. Students in grades five, eight, and eleven will also take the California Science Test (CAST). All material assessed is based on the California State Content Standards (CCSS) and the information gathered helps ensure continued improvement among our schools by addressing the needs of all students.
The Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments consist of two sections: a computer adaptive test and a performance task (PT). The district testing window is now open and will remain open through the end of the school year. Individual school sites have scheduled their testing windows and will make their specific testing schedules available to you in the coming days. Student results will be available electronically via your secure AERIES parent portal, allowing you to view current and previous results.
PYLUSD is home to outstanding students, teachers, and programs and we encourage full participation in the Smarter Balanced Assessment to ensure our students and schools earn the recognition they deserve. PYLUSD utilizes SBA data for placement in appropriate instructional programs such as GATE, Honors, and Advanced Placement. In addition, results are used for statewide recognition programs. SBA English Language Arts and Math achievement scores are integral to the criteria for awarding students the Golden State Seal Merit Diploma and State Seal of Biliteracy.
Ultimately, for eleventh-grade students, California State Universities and Community Colleges use SBA results to determine college readiness. Eleventh-grade results provide essential information for proper Language Arts and Math placement. If needed, twelfth-grade students can receive assistance within their school day without the need to take outside classes or placement tests before college entrance.
To learn more about the Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments or the CAST, go to the California Department of Education Parent Guides to Understanding webpage at CDE Parent Guide to Understanding. You can also view sample test questions on the practice tests, which can be found on the CAASPP Web Portal at CAASPP Practice & Training.
We thank you for investing in your student’s education and for your ongoing support of our schools.
Sincerely,
Dr. Olivia Yaung
Assistant Superintendent Educational Services
