Womens History Month March 2019
What else is inside MyBackpack....... Ohhhh Vocabulary.com!
Vocabulary.com is one of the most student focused programs in the MyBackpack suite yet it is one of the most underused databases. This database was developed to help students become proficient with all types of testing especially GMAS preparation using a gaming format. Teachers can request lists to create games, quizzes and more. I challenge each grade to create some wonderful vocabulary games and have fun increasing vocabulary and writing skills at one time!
SEL Book for March: Hidden Figures
Hidden Figures is a wonderful bridge from Black History Month to Women's History Month. This book is based on the New York Times bestselling book and the Academy Award–nominated movie Hidden Figures. The author Margot Lee Shetterly and illustrator Laura Freeman have brought the incredibly inspiring true story of four black women who helped NASA launch men into space to picture book readers!
Atlanta Women's History
March is Women's History Month and the women of Atlanta are taking the lead with greatness. We are excited to highlight a special woman from Atlanta in this Smore, a real S-heroes. Take a good look at Grace Hamilton. She was one of the first African American women to win a seat in the General Assembly. She and other leaders demanded that the City of Atlanta recreate the City Council to represent black voters. She also helped to establish a larger black hospital, Hughes Spaulding Pavilion, to treat patients and train black doctors in the city of Atlanta. Black Atlantans had only 2 other small facilities - Harris Hospital and McClendon Hospital. Your Media Specialist was born at the Hughes Spaulding Pavilion.
Reading for Information
Reading for Information is one of the key pieces for successful outcomes on the GMAS. All of those that seek to be life long learners must also master this skill. Many of us as adults find ourselves in graduate programs reading informational text. What if you learned some exciting strategies to help you stay engaged in this type of reading when you were school-aged? Many strategies can be taught early on to assist students with reader's fatigue when reading for information.

This Month's Theme: Perseverance
The SEL competency skill for the month of March is Self-Management. The Book that we will focus on this month is The Crossover, by Kwame Alexander. "With a bolt of lightning on my kicks . . .The court is SIZZLING. My sweat is DRIZZLING. Stop all that quivering. Cuz tonight I'm delivering," announces dread-locked, 12-year old Josh Bell. He and his twin brother Jordan are awesome on the court. But Josh has more than basketball in his blood, he's got mad beats, too, that tell his family's story in verse, in this fast and furious middle grade novel of family and brotherhood.
Josh and Jordan must come to grips with growing up on and off the court to realize breaking the rules comes at a terrible price, as their story's heart-stopping climax proves a game-changer for the entire family.
